Alto I have two the one I play when I play is a PPT the other a Vandoren A25

Sop Currently playing an Ed Pillinger piece and have a Selmer S80 E, Yamaha 6c and Bari Esprit. I have sold a couple of cheaper sop pieces. I still don't think I've found my forever sop piece though and am considering a PPT just can't decide which size to buy 🙂

No Kev, it's an ESM jazz (ESM Ernst Schreiber GmbH Michelstadt) with the metal ring at the end.

Some years back, when I wanted a new mpc, I went to guy who specialises in doing 'mpc tests':
Mouthpiece measurement

He listened to my old mpc and asked me what I wanted from a new mpc. He then did some 'breathing tests', gave me a couple of different mpc's to try out, and gave feedback when I played each one. Based on my evaluation and his feedback, he selected the next couple of mouthpieces to try and so on. Though I'd never heard of it either, I really liked the ESM and ordered one online. I should add that the guy was dead against metal mpc's (quoting health reasons) so he only had non-metal mpc's in his collection.

I was ashamed that I didn't know how many mouthpieces I have, so I counted them. It's a lot more than I expected:

10 soprano
7 alto
9 tenor
7 baritone

I have been wondering why I have so many. It's mainly because I have been experimenting and haven't sold the ones I don't get on with. I keep them partly because I have a suspicion that my ability or taste may change in the future. Also I think a good mouthpiece for jazz ballads is not necessarily the best for blending in a quartet.

But this exercise has made me realise that I haven't really decided what I want to sound like, and I have been buying mouthpieces in the hope of finding out. This is not a good strategy. I'm going to try harder to listen to recordings to see what I aspire to.

Part of my problem is that I don't particularly want to sound like my favourite players. For example, my absolute favourite alto player is Johnny Hodges, but I wouldn't want to sound like him, even if I could.

Alto: Yamaha 4c, Meyer M5M, Morgan Jazz 6M, Morgan New York Jazz 6(ML) and Morgan Jazz 6L, D'addario Select Jazz D7M and Westcoast Sax MOAM 7 (winging its way later this month).

Tenor: Yanagisawa 5, Morgan Jazz 6MLL.

Working on the missus to soften her up to allow a Baritone in the house. The neighbours hate us already (well, the narky woman) so might as well go all in...

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
