Jazz Hiromi Uehara

Re: Now for something completely different...

Thanks Kev, for moving this. I didn't realise that she hadn't been posted on the forum before.

Her keyboard skills never cease to astound me.

@saxplorer I'm pleased to see that somebody else is buying her cds. The title song of cd you mention is a glorious piece of music.

Re: Now for something completely different...

This piece is from that album (as is the piece linked to in the OP).

you've seen how she makes an instant harpsichord ... see around 6 mins in how her piano becomes a string bass ...

Re: Now for something completely different...

For the technically minded, the piano is a "struck" instrument where a hammer covered with felt hits the strings. A harpsichord is a plucked instrument. There is a quill attached to a jack. The quill is used as a plectrum to pluck the string. The timbre of the sound depends on the material that is used for the quill, which can be real quills or leather and on 'where' the string is plucked. On some harpsichords, you can get multiple sets of strings to select from with different timbres. Wiki entry is here.

I just love her playfulness and her understanding and mastery of her instrument as she shapes its sound to her purposes.

More magic here:
