I really like that. My younger daughter went through a false eyelash thing a couple of years back. I happened to find one of those interior letter-box draught-excluder things in a skip (the ones with two brush seals which anyone who had a paper round in 80s UK might remember) and I gave it to her, saying she could repurpose it. She didn't laugh then, or any other time I referred to her draught excluders.

Kenny G's pictures remind me what a painful thing it is to fall in love with some aspect of one's own myth. I have a similar but somehow opposite problem - I have paid for two haircuts in my adult life ('91 and '99, since you ask), having been in the 'cut the end of the pony tail off with scissors now and again' for the previous millennium (that's hard to spell), and 'cheap Argos clippers' for this one. It feels like a jump to change now. I think I'd quite like a haircut in the barber's, but along with conquering personal style inertia I am faced with the same embarrassing dilemma I struggle with in a butcher's shop. 'What can I get you sir?'. 'Well, err, I'd like some meat, please'.

I have also struggled with barbers until I finally, at a ripe old age, found the ideal. Kurdish barber in Southampton that does £8 haircuts.

Kovan’s shop is unlike any other barber I know in that they always have the 3 chairs occupied and usually at least 3 waiting. Instead of background music, it is the Koran, and I’m OK with that.

When I told Kovan I was moving to London I asked 2 things. Did he know of a good barber and what should I ask for?

He said I must find a Kurdish barber and to ask for medium short on top and 5321 side and back.

I could not find a Kurdish barber, but I have now found a good one from Macedonia. I was vey scruffy as I was in the middle of house renovation and hadn’t had a cut for 3 and a half moths and he looked at me as if I had no idea about haircuts.

But when I said medium short on top and 5321 he beamed with delight and we got on very well. But no Koran just a very chatty barber who did a great 5321 and showed me his vintage clippers and razor set and gave me the whole story of why barbers have a barber pole outside. Good value even if twice Kovan’s price.

I just paid $82 for a haircut - it’s the cheapest of the services at this place, called the “Barber Cut”. I tipped the stylist $20. The stylist is named Tuesday, but you have to see her on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday…

There are dam few actual barber shops in my neck of the woods. Nearest one many miles away, with very little parking. And the haircut there is $60…

My previous hair person charged $100, as part of the $300 charge for my late wife and me. We always went together for hair treatment; wifey had hair color too, which raised the price bar for her. When she got sick and couldn’t leave the house, our stylist made house calls for us, which was lovely. I’d still go to her, but she lives 75 miles away and is basically retired.

This was in the mid 1980's when I was a bit younger and had hair.

My wife wanted to save money, so I bought a set of brand name electric clippers at the Navy Exchange, Naval Base in Long Beach, close to our home. Cost less than $12.

300th Army Band was big on proper haircuts, so she did her first cut on me.

I showed up during rehearsal next day, a Saturday. During break, conversing with others, one of the trumpet players was staring oddly at my head then asked, "Who cut your hair?"
My reply, "My wife."
He said, "Oh," then quietly walked away.

Over time with practice she's gotten better at it.

Hair? I have vague recollections... it was a long time ago
Me too, like 40 years ago.

They used to call me "fire alarm", like the ones that you punch really hard and then push the button! I mean, they were on average 2-3 years older until I did the original version of Ralphie in "A Christmas Story" and turned into Taz to beat the crap out of 3 of those punks who had at least 80 lbs on me.

And then I was the one who had to go the principal's office!

Okay, I’ll jump in. This is my headshot from my stand up days, around 1990. Crazy story. Somebody has this photo for sale on eBay. I don’t know where they got it, but it’s not worth the 20 bucks they’re asking. I’ve got a whole box of them.
