Ebay Corton Tenor

Hi again, I'm going to have to stop this buying lark I know But...... I just bought a Corton Super Tenor sax from a guy 10 miles up the road via ebay.

It hard work down the bottom end but certainly playable. The case is like a cross between a 1970's suitcase and a caravan from the same decade. It just oozes goldy brown velvet and has that padded grey leather exterior that "Generation game" contestants would have died to have on their luggage prizes.

I got the sax, the case, mouthpiece lig etc, Amarti reeds, Armati neck strap, full set of replacement pads, full set of replacement springs and point screws. A chamois pull through that wouldn't look out of place buffing a Ford Cortina and a reed case for the princely sum of ?100 😛 I only bought it to practice leak testing and adjustments on but its too good to ruin. Pics to follow.

The sax has no scratches, no dents no damage apart from the flux/solder is bleeding through the lacquer in a few small places, and I had to decline an offer of a ?20 deduction for that reason. The inside of the bell is not lacquered but is so clean. It sounds OK with the Amarti mouthpice but I can feel an upgrade coming on. The guy said he hasn't played it for years and when he did it was only for a short while.

Has anyone got any experience of these Corton/Armati sax's or thoughts about them as a brand?

See ya

I can't comment on Corton, but I play an Amati, I'm very happy with mine. She gets played daily and thrashed twice a month when my band plays. I was amazed to find out that she is nearly 50 years old. Everything is fairly tight and the build quality appears to be good. I had her serviced last year and was told that there wasn't much work needed. So on the whole I think you've got a good bargain, I hope you enjoy her. 8)

Great buy! ? 100 for a tenor. I like the Amati saxes. One of the brands that have their own style. No Selmer look-a-like approach. I think the saxes are priceworth.

The Amati factory were (maybe still is??) a big manufactor of stencils and making parts for other brands. I once own a King Super 20 tenor from -82 and the body was very like a Amati.!?! I almost got the felling of a certain relationship between the saxes!?!?

The Classic mpc (a Czech made metal mouthpiece) works fine with Amatis.

I think I prefer the squarer engraving and the shape of the left hand key cluster. Although the key cluster is a bit far down, and is a bit of a stretch. Makes a change from floral engraving and round shapes everywhere.

Taz, with the exception of the engraving it looks pretty much the same. Glad you enjoy yours what mouthpiece/reed do you use with yours?

I like playing the bari in the band, and my alto is a reliable friend that will be perfect every time I pick it up without fail. But just for messing about at home playing 8| along to music and stuff the tenor seems the best.

I use a Runyon Quantum 10 with an Eddie Daniels II lig and Vandoran 2.5 Its quite a hard setup, but it gives me a great rock and roll sound.
I love playing my amati, she's not bad for a 48 year old.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
