Contenders

If anyone is able to send a pc-crippling virus to the git who keeps spamming me I'd be very grateful. It's the same person every time, and he responds to replies which means the e-mail address I am seeing is a genuine one. He is just not taking the hint, even when I've tried ignoring him. Git.

Re the 'ask the pro' forum, I think things work pretty well as they are, although seeing Griff around a bit more coukd be useful. I like the fact that not-very-advanced players like me can advise beginners, and receive advice from more advanced players, often in the same thread! But I do feel it's goid having a beginners section where you don't feel daunted by being, as you may think, the only total beginner in the forum, which means you don't feel stupid asking apparently dumb questions.

Incidentally, what's happened to the contributors to the new starter diaries?

Cheers, Bob

....... I just like the idea of this forum giving varied answers as I believe there usually are.

E.G when asked what ligaturesounds best I'll say they all sound the same, but I completely and utterely respect the opinion of those who think there are differences in sound due to the ligature, and I think someone asking such a question should see both sides of that particular debate.
I see what your saying Pete, but I think the point has been slightly missed. We have the normal mouthpiece, playing, technical etc sections and they quiet rightly attract the diverse questions 'and responses' which I agree are valuable, but consider (as is the way with many forums), for example, the beginner. The likes of yourself, Spike, Griff and others can go into a forum and from experience way up the plum from the prune answers, beginners or those by definition, that come into a forum looking for answers, can't do that. My thought is, forums information loses a lot of it's validity and qualification with answers that are not given (however genuine) from years of experience. SOTW is a great and active forum, but due to the shear volume of posts, you can go on there and come away more confused. My thought for an "ask the pro" was not to replace anything we already have, just a compliment to the other end of the spectrum from the beginners section.

Not to worry, just an opinion.

Come back griff please!
Yes, try posting a technical question... he might pop up 😉

Hey, how about asking your pal, Steve Howard, if he's got time to pop in as well?

Ah but the thing is I do read every post and I answer every question that I feel I have a valid answer to. Sometimes i don't answer things in the beginners sectio nas that is designed to be answered by beginners, but if I feel the urge or I think it's a good idea I do join in that forum as well if I think my opinion is positve to the discussion.

I haven't rejected your idea out of hand, I am considering all (or at least many) angles.

how about a section called "spam here"? Then at least all the spams go in the same place, n then you could set it to instantly delete, and send a PC crippeling virus to the persons computer who posted it >:)

Lovely

Guessinthis is perhaps not an option eh? 🙂

As for that - fraid I cant help my virus construction is not up to much. Could find his address n go round n bash the PC in with something blunt and heavy?

Hey thats n idea - as your forum gets bigger Pete you should employ some muscle/renegade band of missionaries/some one who is big to become your spam fighting force, punishing all of those who spam in your path to forum domination.

(though with the volume of inane posts I contribute [less contribute more clogg up perhaps] to the forum, I fear I may be first on their list and will have to flee to a remote forum far far away, and go under the protection of a witt-less protection agency [not far removed from you spam protectors]. such a life I cannot face - please, I'll be good, don't let them come and find me...
:cry🙂

mind you I'm sure the funny farm'll get here first... :erm:

Bob, If the spammer using a genuine e-mail address, then why don't you report him/her to their ISP or (if the case) their domain hosting admin. Other than that just bung the address in a black list on your e-mail client.

Always, imho, a bad move to respond to them, you just confirm yours is a valid e-mail address end up on even more spamming lists.

I don't mind being on a spamming list for that mail address as it's my work one. Teach 'em to sort out their spam filters >:)

Going back, or looking forward, to member no. 1000 - if they prove to be a lurker, perhaps the forum administrator could cordially invite them, via a PM, to 'ring the doorbell' as there are some friendly, helpful, knowledgable people who would like to welcome them.

Cheers, Bob

Sorry, I assumed from your previous message that you wanted rid of em.

Perhaps with the lure of a gift and if they turn out to be a beginner they get an instructional DVD, if experienced a copy of Mr Lucky.

Well that'll be Ken. I think he's set up an auto-regenerate avatar feature. You watch, Dylan flashing a peace sign will be back soon.
Cheers, Bob

Per chance would that be a Pete rendition of a certain ballad... or have we covered that :erm:

Definitely not, no. If I ever did that it means I have too much time on my hands. I'll redesign the forum and get rid of the light blue surround before recording Giant Steps as a ballad.

cry.webp

Teddy's gonna get it now 🙂

The one I really want rid of is the spammer who is promising me untold riches - hey, maybe I shoukd reverse-scam him and ask for a cheque for a few grand upfront as a goodwill gesture? - the rest I can live with as they are all headed *SPAM* so something's not working right somewhere... and it's not my little pda...

Then again, they'll think they're being spammed and won't come through the front door :erm:
