Hi there, not long off the phone placing my order for a hanson tenor. I plan on getting lessons every week when it arrives however Im sure a couple of books will be handy!
Are there any recommended books for starting off on tenor to getting slightly better?!
Thanks!

lots of posts on this subject in the "teachers resources etc" board, have a browse.

if youre getting a teacher (good move) theyll probably want to teach you out of something specific.

I went to a saxophone day a few years ago and was given a list of music suggestions for all levels. The beginner level is mostly for alto/piano. However, Play Gershwin (Faber Music) and Cops, Caps and Cadillac's by Chris Gumbly were suitable for alto and tenor.

"Introducing the Sax" by James Ray (Universal) Lots of good teacher/pupil duets. Enjoy the tenor.

hmmm looks like there are a few il need to track down!
Shame so many seem to be for alto only! E-mailed my teacher to be and he did mention the tune a day book to "learn the notes and basic fingering", which is probably a good idea although the tunes leave a lot to be desired!
The john oneill book looks quite interesting think il probably give that a try too.
Jimmy dorseys seems like a good one to have around ditto cops caps.
May be best waiting a couple weeks till I get my sax and actually sit down with teacher first!

Check out "Learn as You Play The Saxophone" by Peter Wastell. You might prefer it over A Tune A Day. There is a CD available for the Wastell book.

I also recommend the "Learn as you Play".
Nice tips appear throughout the book on Note reading associated with words and Syllables.
for Example:- "triples can be played as a three syllabus word, Ten-ta-tive

Tune a day that bad huh?! I really like the look of the John O'Neill book so think il get a copy of that off jazzwise. Plenty of learn as you plays on ebay, so will try to get it for a pound! I take it its for alto or tenor? If I see tune a day there as well I may go for it but but even on sax I dont know how long I could stand stand those songs!
But then again coltrane managed to make "my favourite things" more than listenable!

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
