BOTM July 2019 - Danny Boy (Londonderry Air)

Another one take with warts (well, one glaring wart, at least) and noodling.
I might have another bash when it's a bit cooler.
That was lovely - a very sensitive reading and tasteful improvisation.

Rhys

I think warts and noodling is what we're having for supper tonight. Or maybe it is the title of a new TV cop show.

The month is ending, but this thread will remain open. So feel free to add more recordings if and when you like.

Many thanks to @rhysonsax for choosing a very popular ballad, and to the contributors who have posted recordings.

I'm generally not a fan of this tune for various reasons, however, at summer school last week I played bari in the Percy Grainger version. The bari line is really nice. I can't find a wind band version on youtube, only a brass band version so I'm guessing the euphonium has the bari line. One of the reasons I'm not a big fan of "Danny Boy" is the tendency to grossly over-sentimentalise it and perform it lento with a crotchet = 40 speed. I'm glad to say in our performance common sense prevailed and the tempo was a much more sensible andante.
