Blues tonite.

BBC 4, Seasick Steve, Old Time and then more blues. Ruin Gordon's plan, stay in, look and listen.

Seasick Steve- a meteoric rise to fame in his mid 60s, repsect to the man. First time I gigged with him HE was supporting MY band at a grotty pub in brighton (blew us away, but that's another matter).
Definately tune in this evening- he's great....

Seen him live twice and he is astounding. What is so nice to see is the spread of the audience - from staid old gits like me down teenagers. Great that he has such broad appeal.

Gigged with him loads. If you ever get a chance to see him in a really small, scuzzy venue that's where his music really thrives. Played a dive in hastings with him a few times to a bunch of drunken chavs- they loved him, we loved him, it was the perfect place for his brand of raw blues (closest thing we've got ot a souhern juke joint).
PS- anyone know the late RL Burnside?

@ nacho - We have a couple of R L Burnside albums - John loves his music.

Saw Seasick Steve for 1st time a couple of years ago on Jools Holland - he's great to watch. Will tune in tonight.

Love him! Unfortunately I missed the telly, but will have a look at some Youtube stuff by way of compensation. I wonder if he needs a saxophone player.

Guess who's Freeview Box decided to retire like its owner?
Managed to watch a stream on the Mac.
If one of the newish members stayed tuned for the Barbican Concert, they'd have seen how a fretless banjo should be played, after being defretted and then having the board refaced. Incidentally, Cedric Watson, the Zydeco melodeon player is also one of the best Cajun fiddlers, having been part of The Pine Leaf Boys.
Hope you all enjoyed it although none of the acts had a sufficient allocation of time.

in the spirit of bigging myself up.... been there, done it... on baritone for a few gigs ages ago, together with various of the other lads from Mudlow....! Actually- mainly played gob iron, as that obviously made more sense in context but a bit of baritone "new orelans marching band bass" fitted in too

i watched it...i thought it was great, i`ve got a few of his albums, the new one seems a bit over produced to me, i prefer the raw acoustic stuff. He seems like a genuine humble sort of guy to me, the kind you`d like to sit and have a few beers with and just listen to his stories.

The first one- "Cheap", where he's got a full band, seems to be the one that's in the CD player most in my car/household...

No, no, Jules, you big yourself up! Main thing is, was it fun? The biggest self-big-up I can come up with (file under 'fish-out-of-water) was that I played in the band at Kim Wilde's 21st and she got up and did a few numbers with us.

I saw Seasick on Jool's Hootenannay couple of years ago, and thought wow! wouldn't mind seeing more of him. Then saw the Beeb4 prog in the TV mag, and thought 'that rings a bell, I'm sure that was the guy on Jool's prog', but missed it, then saw the comments on this thread and watched it on iPlayer and thought great! Would have been better to have had more of his music on the prog but the insight into the deep south was interesting.
