Blind Brisbane Busker

Met Graham Pampling, in the very busy Brisbane Queen Street Mall today.

I heard him earlier and returned to record him, as I walked up the mall.

He plays with a warm full tone and very free playing.

When he stopped playing I started talking to him, a really nice old fella, got that aussie cheaky sense of humour.... didn't realize he was blind until he started fishing around in his case to see how many coins he had...... he's been playing in the mall for 20 years and been playing for 52 years, just a beginner, he says. His favourite player, Freddie Gardner!

I said I'm also a sax player and I have my sax over my shoulder now, how's about a Jam, I said.......he said, if you don't have a permit, and they catch you, it could be a $500 fine.....it's ok by me he said....I said how much is the permits...... there free he says, but you have to do an audition!....... so I says,.... how often do you play here?.....six and a half days a week..... ok I says, I'll get a permit and return to you....... see you soon Graham.....

Busking seem to be allot of fun on Brisbane streets, people are very tolerant and appreciative of Buskers.

Never had a permit before (it's the rebel in me)......yeah always up fer somtin new, the next blog due in a couple of days.

Plus gonna check out a few Sax shops in Brissy.....will keep yas posted.

Just working on the next one and intend to have some sound clips...unforunatley the audio quality, talking to Graham was rough, but I'll put some up just as a test.

I,m also working on a podcast idea I have, but that's another story and another post.

Sue, Update on the permit situation, it is a no goer, the next audition is not till 30th August, I'll be long gone, I'll see if I can Coax my Busker friend to Jam outside of his patch (Queens Street Mall).

Office in antipode easy, running from permit police with sax under arm a lot more difficult.

Interesting legal angle ... is permit needed to busk in street (i.e. receive money, hopefully, for such services) or is all playing of a musical instrument 'in a public place' requiring a permit. For example, if I were to tootle on my blues harp while strolling around this fair city, without holding my cap out, would that be allowed or not? If allowed, then maybe the busker can be persuaded to accompany you to a local park for a blow, as long as neither of you are doing it profitably

What sort of titfer is that? It isn't a pork pie or trilby or even a baseball cap - must be some sort of ethnic Kiwi head adornment :-D

lossav...short answer...in this case no...long answer, any busker worth his salt is not interested in legal matters and does it for the joy and fun, money well it's chicken feed, ok for the chooks & buys me an icecream or two after I've been a blowin.

Now youv'e hit a spot....bought that one travelling in Richmond Virginia USA years ago, so it's been around.....maybe I'll start a new post called Fav's tit4tats...

House sitting responsibilitys, at the moment I'm fighting for laptop keyboard space with the saimese cat, he's switched it off twice this morning already

Siamese cats are like that - I once lived in a house share with 3 of the blighters and we had to put the door handles on upside down and wedge the fridge shut! Well I think it was the cats stealing food, but I was very young and naiive.

Never travel without a roll of gaffa tape (duct tape for the colonials) - it fixes all sorts of problems, from leaky tents to footwear to naughty cats. I suspect you could even fashion a funky hat out of the stuff!
