Beginners' Diary - Chris

Well I've pretty much read all 16000 words Chris, and very entertaining it is too, as well as giving insight into those difficult early days. 4 years on I'm still in those difficult early days :erm: , but you just have to carry on learning, and it's great, I love it! :w00t:

If your playing brings as much pleasure as you have created for us readers, then you will be well rewarded.

Be careful though, Mick may take over from you :w00t:

Hi Chris, merry christmas, happy new year and what a wonderful read your diary has been. It's really makes for pleasurable reading and reminds me of some of the feelings I had upon picking up the sax for the first time, as well as reminding me of some things I really should be doing!!!

Keep it up 😉

I love giving it some welly.
I think that you should always practise as loud as you can manage and then a bit more. It gets you breathing more, sounding better and enjoying it more (still play dynamics and as quiet as you did before).
Obviously this could be a problem with neighbours some times but if you're sensible with it and don't do it at unreasonable times it should be fine. I've never had a neighbour complain, god knows I've been trying!

Hi Lee,

All the best,

Chris

buy one 😛

then you'll have the advantage of the soprano lurking at the front of your mind, or maybe it'll be a baritone first?

Lee,

It's a painful thing to admit but I think you are right it seems the only long term cure for such a horrific affliction, but at least I know I'll be amongst like minded fellows when my time comes.

All the best,

Chris 😛

I think you deserve some kind of award, I hereby dub you Sir Percy Verance.

...or, if Jasper keeps it up, you could change the last name to "Cution"!

Great stuff, Chris!

Remember that progress is not linear - three steps forwards, one step back, and all that. I know it's easy to get discouraged when things don't go well (and I'm the world's worst at this!), but try a blast through some tunes that used to give you problems and you'll see how far you've come.

Deep down, you know your making good progress overall.

Now, if you want to prepare for the tenor, work on your air support. Trust me, you'll need it! 😉

Air support yes, but tenor is in a lot of ways a more relaxing blow than alto. I say get one Chris, you'll love it 🙂

Hi Frank & Bobby,

Funny you should mention air support, I'm just beginning to understand how to use it to get the higher notes instead of 'biting', if that makes any sense, but this is a relatively new discovery so I could well be mistaken.

Anyway, thanks for the support with regards to the tenor!

All the best,

Chris

Tenor sax ? Never regret getting one.Do it. Do it now.

More relaxing blow than the alto? Definately. Do it. Do it now

Biting? Don't do it. Don't do it now

Took me years to get that last one. Need to consciously remind myself not to bite. Probably linked to the mistaken feeling of having to "squeeze" out high notes 🙂

I have come to view my tenor and alto as different instruments. I get a different feeling from both of them and urges to play different types of music on them. I started giving more attention to my tenor to bring it up to speed with my alto. Then I started giving it more attention because I was enjoying it so much. But once I pick up my alto, I remember how much fun I have.

So, I am of the opinion that having another sax is not a bad thing. It opens up musical doors for you 🙂

Good luck and keep up the diary. Great reading

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
