Bb fingering

I tend to use the long Bb (B+F) going up and A +side key (R3) coming down

How do you do yours

No really, we use A and the side key it just seems easier now. He explained that B+F is a jazz fingering and has no place in classical playing. 😛 Teachers Eh?

Easier hum.. but with the long Bb going up, your fingers (right hand) are more set/ready to play quicker No?

Personally I prefer to use the bis key (keeping my pinky finger over it and the B natural if I can see that I wouldn't need to roll to B natural). Only if the bis Bb fingering or side fingering (my second choice) are awkward do I use a long Bb.

This is mainly because I haven't really bothered practising long Bb's - perhaps I should.

Maybe your classically minded teacher doesn't like the long Bb because it sounds slightly different. I've heard that some jazz players exploit the slightly different tones of unusual fingerings for effect - Lester Young was one of these players.

bis key, now I should trying using that but just haven't, maybe it's because the books I have been using, don't really show it being used

Dependson the piece and the key really, if its in F I generally use the Bis key. but depends on the surrounding passage, never think to use the B+F generally A+side key for A# and B+Bis for Bb.

In Desafinado I use both bis and A+ side key in the opening phrase.

I guess horses for courses.

I wont get a new teacher 😛 , he is very "classical" but amazing with it. I hear what youre saying about the fingers being ready but they are never off the key touch anyway (hopefully). So a slight tip of the hand and its there. Still as everyone is different its good to have the choice.

Be interested to hear what our forum pro's think. There must be sequences of notes where both ways have an advantage, but I'm not there yet :laugh:

Mmm well

I mostly use A & side since that is what my teacher first introduced me to and so it feels more comfortable. However more recently I use the bis in certain keys. Still requires a consious effort though.

I consider the long Bb in situations where it ought to be efficient - but since I'm not really used to it I tend to revert to the comfort zone of the side version.

If I'm finding difficulties in a passage involving a Bb I'll try the alternatives. Some day I hope to reach a stage where this is a viable solution 🙂

I nearly always use the Bis key.
Coming from a flute background I started off always using the long fingering. I basically never use it now.
I only really use the side method when trilling, or playing a fast passage over that awkward B C D area, but most of the time the Bis key still does the job fine.

Hi Smiffy,

I tend to use the ?A? + side key except when the key dictates the B is flat in which case I use the bis B but that is catching me out more and more now that they keep throwing in a B♮! I haven?t used the long B♭ before, I?ll have to try it out.
