Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as a home study course for woodwind repair. I know Newark collage do a 3 yr course full time Thats impossible for me is there any other way for me to learn this these skills thankyou Tom.

Do you have an aptitude for it? By that I mean are you good with your hands already when it comes to mending things? Some people seem to be really cut out to do that kind of thing. If you were good at making models or carpentry when you were a kid rather than getting glue everywhere then there's a good chance you can learn quite quickly.

For a start I'd try taking your horn apart and putting it back together. To be on the safe side try it in stages, e.g. take off the palm keys then reassemble. next take off the left hand stack (G to C) and reassemble. Then go for the right hand stack. While doing this give everything a clean up and a bit of lubrication.

I think if, as Pete says, you are reasonably good with your hands and can 'see' the problem, you can do a certain amount of adjusting and maintenance on your own horn without necessarily doing a course - enough to keep them playable or giggable anyway, and this with only basic tools. Obviously for anything more major, or if you plan on taking money off people for fixing their horns a course would be ideal, but I reckon you'd also have to invest in quite a range of good tools.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
