Stemming from the 'Expression' thread, does anyone know if Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges ever recorded together, and if there's anything available?

Yes, they did. If you do a google search you will find what's available.
They also played in the Duke Ellington Orchestra (I think in th 1940s but I am not 100% sure).

Thanks for that, I am a big fan of Hodges with the Duke, what I'm after is some small group recordings if there are any. BTW, Webster meets Peterson is a very nice album

Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges "Side by Side" 1958 & 1959

It's a superb album and the six tracks from the 1958 recording featured Ben Webster, Johhny Hodges, Lawrence Brown (trombone), Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Jo Jones (drums), Wendell Marshall (bass) and Billy Strayhorn (piano).

The six tracks from 1959 didn't have Ben Webster but are also great.

This is really an album for Desert Island Discs, along with its companion "Back to Back) by Ellington and Hodges (same personnel and probably same recording date as the 1959 tracks from "Side by Side").

Get them both !

I'm very tempted Rhys, they'll sit quite nicely with Such Sweet Thunder and Piano in the Background. And they have the marvellous Roy Eldridge too, so what am I waiting for!?

I had an introduction to the library today Bob, no actual work.
I took out a couple books which all seems great.
One on thee history of various big bands, one on jazz in America from the 20's to the present day and one on how to practise jazz.

Reading and studying those is my self given 'work' at the moment. Listening to pre WWII Jazz this week and writing 300 words on one track of my choice is my 'assignment'.

Seriously, university is tough man, 90 words just here...
