Jim Mullen used to play guitar with Brian Auger and Vinegar Joe. He now has a solo carrer as a jazz guitarist. I saw him on Tuesday at Marlow jazz club. There's not much to say; he's a fine guitar player with a unique style. He was partnered by Vasilis Xenopoulos, a young tenor player from Athens. He had all the skills and loads of personality. The rhythm section was Marlow's resident band, the Frank Toms Trio. They are top-class, and on Tuesday all five musicians blended perfectly as though they'd been playing together for years. They played standards mostly at a furious pace, but with a couple of beautifully-handled ballads. "Softly as a Morning Sunrise" stands out. Best seven pounds I've spent for ages! Peter King and Simon Spillett in two weeks!
