cheers guys for your patients and detailed answers - as I read your answer and progress into this theory book I've got, it is all slowly becoming clear.
last night was the scales and keys chapter - knowing what pattern of tones and semitones to look out for either a major or minor scale makes alot of what you say crystal clear.
