The screw for the g# key

Drives me insane! It keeps loosening the more i play g#. Any advice on how to keep it in place, besides super glue. lol

Loctite.

It is probably not that different from superglue but you can get it specially for holding screws that would otherwise vibrate loose. I think they use it on spaceships and submarines where the consequences are a bit worse than a few low notes not working properly.

It is designed so that it holds, but the force of a scrtewdriver will allow it to budge.

Pete,

Loctite comes in a few different flavours, some permanent, some semi permanent. I don't know about on a sax, but it can also affect lacquer and other finishes and crack off bits of laquer when trying to remove it.

Again, I don't know what this screw is, but I wonder if it might be possible to wrap a piece of ptfe tape around it to tighten the thread!?

hi Mikey,

I use clear nail polish - you know the stuff that the wife uses on her fingernails.

its cheap, comes with a brush and its brittle so when it comes to unscrewing the screw - it cracks.

its a standard method for locking the regulating screws on flutes too.

ive had a loose screw ( and one on my sax too 😉 )

i had a chat with a sax repair guy and he said that a little drop of stud lock on the end is what he would consider standard maintenance.

I did as he said and have had no further problems.

stud lock is fine but can sometimes be a B*****D to budge if you need to adust the screw - after all it is an adjusting screw.
Using the nail varnish is free if your missus has some and it cracks easily when the screw is turned.
