The free one actually doesn't have transposition but I got in touch with the developers and they suggested trying the beta version which does. Now I know how it works I will pay for the Pro version (after all its only fair)

It's good practice to do transpositions for yourself. If you rely on an app or a gizmo it may slow your development. It's surprising how soon it becomes second nature. Once you've learned the names of the finger positions for playing, add concert pitches to one or two for tuning and then join up the gaps. That's for Eb instruments. Why you'd need a transposer for Bb I can't imagine.

It may also be helpful to distinguish between the written note (symbol) and the sounding pitch. That is---when the alto saxophone plays the written note G, the pitch that sounds is concert Bb a major 6th lower than the written note. All transposing instruments play written notes that have a different concert sounding pitch. "Concert" simply means the key of C. All concert pitch wind instruments sound the pitch of the note read on the staff except the piccollo which sounds an octave higher.

And now for some trivia - guitars are transposing instruments - cos they play an octave lower than written/concert pitch...

Okay , if we're going for trivia. Bass Trombone written in Bass clef can be played as is, on Baritone if you read it as treble clef. Sheesh I hope I've remembered that right.

If you mean baritone sax, that is correct. All you do is add 3 sharps (or take away 3 flats) from the key signature. It is easy until you hit those #%*&!! accidentals.

Yes it covers everything, very easy to use as well.

Playing with a tuner app I found for my ipad. When it comes to transposition it iis automatically set on C. Is this all correct when checking notes on my alto? Very unsure..

No, your alto is keyed in Eb.......in other words when you play a c on your alto you will see an Eb on your tuning ap, are you able to change the setting of your ap so it's in Eb?
