I have longish hair (nearly at the bottom of my neck) and I wont be cutting it anytime soon. Last time I grew it I gave into pressure got it cut then decided was gonna grow my hair for me again and so I did.
I also hate golf. Some of my friends play golf and they dont seem to enjoy it but... theyve bn playing for a few years, got all the equipment etc, would be daft to just give it up because they dont enjoy it :S
I think because the sax isnt a guitar or piano its easy to be seen as a novelty instrument. I have had people tell me Im great at the guitar and I personally dont think I am very good as I can only play some chords. When I try to tell folk that they think Im being modest but they only think im good because I happen to have bashed out a song they like. I have no plans to become great at the guitar though and am happy at my ability, sufficient for camping, festivals, folk club etc

I have only told a couple of people about my sax, mum and bro obviously know but only about 2 of my friends! Working my way through abracadabra and doing some scales and what my teacher tells me, will be good when I can actually play a song!

So yeah keep at it I cant wait to be at your stage both playing and reading ability! And il agree that its the low quality of the recording thats affecting your sound.

Well said Pete - my hubby was bought his first clarinet by his dad after interminable nagging - his dad said: ''Another waste of money I expect!'' 🙂 I'm sure that comment spurred him on.

I'm not sure about posting comments re wife then showing them to her . . . maybe it would be better to discuss your feelings with her before posting - anyway she sounds like a diamond and I hope you're buying her lots of flowers and showing her some care.

a whole lad of strangers on the internet and touched quite a few people . . . Plus I'm very proud of this little community here for being so sensitive and supportive

Hey! Some of us are ladettes! *shout*

We're touched cos we're sensitive souls innit? <Been somewhere, Seen things, Got the marks to prove it!>

IF I was older I don't think that would have worked, but what you have done is a great achievement (beyond what people e.g. old git have already said about actually having made a family and kept it) - you have managed to sit down and talk about it with your wife as well as a whole lad of strangers on the internet and touched quite a few people as well as making a big break through in your personal communication with wife etc. Your musical progress is pretty good too so I'd say a positive thing all round.

Plus I'm very proud of this little community here for being so sensitive and supportive.

The only thing that depresses me is that is such a miserable picture of Sonny Rollins.
Hi Pete you are right this is a fantastic site what a great bunch of people and to take so much time for a stranger says it all and a reply from you has just topped it thank you and i am sure i will put something back in one day cheers Tom.

Hi Tom,

There's way of dealing with this but it might not go down too well with relatives. I was practicing in the tea room at work, as usual, when a manager from head office came in, stuck his head in the door and asked
"Who's strangling that cat?"
My response was to invite him to bring his musical instrument of choice down to jam with me anytime. He told me that he didn't play any instruments so I told him to f*** off and come back when he was qualified to pass comments. Not seen him since!!
(There you go Bill - that was my profanity in credit used! )

Hi Tom

I think my late wife initially thought my sax-playing was just a whim (and an expensive one), and she was surprised I've stuck with it...she even said "Your playing has improved a lot"....and some of my nice neighbours have said similar things (I assume those who don't agree have had the manners to keep quiet 🙂 )

FWIW, I think that your playing is better than mine...your sound is easy to listen-to and your 'dexterity' definitely better 🙂
You also play less 'bum notes', although I'd say you could do a bit of work on your timing...listen to a pro, vocal version of 'Summertime', and my teacher advises to try singing it (however good/bad a singer you are) just before you play it...
I play tunes with lyrics much better...🙂

I hope this helps, and that the Philistines become more appreciative.

Hi Tom, I've been off the site for a while, so only just seen this post. Agree with everything the others have said. I understand the need to feel some appreciation from those around you, but you're playing it for yourself, so stick with it.

Best advice is to go and join a wind band or similar. You'll get lots of support, a variety of music to play (some you'd have never thought of playing, but will love when you get to know them) and some reason to practice.

Good luck, Phil

Excellent advice, IMO.

I can only echo what others have said. Keep on keeping on, believe in yourself and let the negative comments wash past and begone.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
