Second page of the score, second stave, halfway along, the notes go all skinny. What's going on there?

Is there a symbol something like 8ve with it? This means play an octacve higher than written. another explanation may be that it's a part played by someone else to show you where to come in.

The notes that have words are part of the song and are printed in bold/normal. The notes in "skinny" are the accompaniment and part of the arrangement not the main theme. It's pretty obvious if you've ever heard the record.

It's a busker book not a music score. Simple format, guitar chords, one stave melody.

I've had a look at this. The solo stops in the third bar of the first time bars, and the little notes are what we call a cue.The cued part is what others are playing while we rest. In this case, come off on the third beat of the third bar and continue counting until the third beat of the eighth bar, then play the pick up into the repeat and take the second time bar.

In playing situations, to cover for missing instruments, we have to play the cues. I think that is the intention here.

I did try playing them, they sounded incongruous to what came before, which made me wonder if there was something going on that I hadn't learned yet, hence the question.

Just one question: if we're counting 3rd beat of 3rd to 3rd beat of 8th anyway, do we need to cover for the missing instruments by playing the cues? Or can we just count ourselves in?

It's not much more than a reminder; keeps us aware of where we are and what others are doing.

And Colin, the new image is much better than sitting on a wooden horsy. The bari looks more like you.

In a band playing situation, with everyone present, you would just play your part as written. The little black dashes you see above the notes are two, and four bar rest signs. That's your part,and you just count up to your next entry.

Band parts usually give and indication of who is playing the cues, Tpt. Alto sax, Brass etc.That can be a help, especially if you're lost.🙂

In the case of this chart, I think the interlude has been put in to give us the complete song to play.

When I was going for lessons, and encountered multiple rest bars, the procedure was to count just one bar and resume.
