Simple recording software reccomendations?

I am such a novice regarding recording and I'm looking for advise on the easiest software to use. I have searched the earlier threads but they seem to point at how good something is rather than how simple.

It doesn't have to be loaded with functions. Just something that I can load backing tracks in to and record myself on at least one other channel.
Then play with the volume and effects before finalising.
This may sound like Cubasis and I have used that before but thats pretty much my point. Is there anything simpler for a quick result?

Cubasis had lots of gizmos that I didn't even want to look at and I got an OK result.... but I was never confident that I could repeat the final product if I had too. Too many twiddly bits for someone who will only accumulate about 5 hours a month hobby time at the most.

Maybe you want a smaller version of Cubase then? Like SE.

Alternatively adobe audition is rather good and simple to use. I'd think it's more than worth looking in to.

Cubase SE is very good for the money (if it's still going, I've a feeling it's been replaced with Sequel) but is still quite deep if you want it to be - it's a cut-down version of Cubase SX but not really that cut down in many respects.

If only you could still get Logic Free - that was a brilliant little free app from Emagic - like a very cut down Logic I think it could do 4 tracks of Audio. Very simple and Winders or Mac. I might have a copy around somewhere.

Thats a plus! in an ideal situation I'd like something thats almost fully automatic but allows you 'to take off the stabilisers' one by one.

I did (or just about). Dorling Kindersley published a thing called "the hit kit" which was the old PC version of Logic (before Apple bought it) plus a cheap microphone.

The e-magic / logic software was V5.5 or thereabouts. I use it all the time and it's fine.

If you can find a copy of Cubase SX3 for sale somewhere, I'd snap it up.

It's a full package, but is still very easy to use and is far superior (IMO) than any of the new Cubase packages out at the moment.

I've got an original old Emagic micro logic mac version 1.6 from 1993 here, used to use it to do midi tracks on a mac SE into a Korg sound module. Those were the days.

I've since switched to Logic but SE is no slouch if you can find a (legal) copy of that and at shop prices it would save you a couple of hundred pounds.

I have been a little reluctant to suggest something that has previously been recommended by the guys here but here goes; what about Audacity?

It allows MP3/midi import/playback, with multiple track recording, easy archiving, as many bells as you wish to gong, and it's free!

I have been using the 1.3 beta, seems simple enough, and way easier for me to handle than Sonar Cubase Audition et al....

It would be good to share knowledge on this (or other) programmes...

That is exactly what I mean, though it is definatly illegal.

Cubase comes with a USB stick that is individual for each copy and allows it to be installed on only 1 machine until you go through a stupid system to remove it from one machine and install on another.

My school bought a few copys last year and I was lucky enough to be *cough* allowed to use one *cough* Though I lost it when my machine got a virus a month or so ago (along with all my music and photos which weren't backed up, so sad).
