I was having quite an interesting time because I transposed some of the chords the wrong way. DoH!

A lot simpler when you play it how it goes lol.😉

Sometimes it's fun to limit what notes you can use Colin, glad you found it a useful exercise. Looking forward to hearing what you make of the next part of it, adding half steps to chord tones🙂

This looks like a good way for apprentice saxophone tamers like me to start to understand ideas behind improvisation and have a go.

Thanks. I will have a go at it for fun at the end of my set pieces, but don't expect me to post the results. Although I have always had positive & useful feedback back regarding the recordings that I have posted.

Hey Rob it doesn't matter what you post it's just about understanding the idea of using chord tones to improvise with. What you play will depend on how well you know them and how much you have used them, just playing the roots and varying the rhythm can be a good starting point.

I am hoping to have a go at this too!

@Chris . Thank you for the tip. I was thinking of writing the triplets onto the stave and starting with them but playing one note each bar will allow ( I hope ) some of my neurones to listen to the backing track and the changes.

Starting with just tonic is a good idea. If I'm reading a chord chart and come across a chord that doesn't come under my fingers tonic is always safe. The thing is not to be trying to work out the notes for that one and miss the next two chords.

Printing the blanc chart is good to work out leading lines or scatter dots around, if that helps.

I found it very demanding not to wander off with this exercise. I've got used to taking a solo after maybe 3, 4 or 5 times through with a melody and going nuts. It took more concentration to stick to chord tones than I usually apply. Very rewarding. Not something I've considered doing recently.

Fake it. Soak the reed in the gin. Scrap the ice, makes your teeth chatter as you head into terminal vibrato.
