Mouthpieces Selmer MPC Pong

I brought this up in an earlier post but because I`ve just spent A$180 on a new Selmer C mouthpiece. I want to raise it again.
As distinct from Yamaha and Yani` mouth pieces, which I have, Selmer must be making them out of vulcanised rubber. I bought an alto one awhile back and the smell of it was so bad that I gave it away. The smell is a typical sulphurised odour and this comes from sulphur used in curing rubber. Anyway I just bought a new Selmer C soprano 3 months ago and the same smell is now starting on this one.
I don`t think my nose is over sensitive but I can`t concentrate on the music with these odorous MPCs under it.
If Yamaha and Yani MPCs are also cured rubber and not plastic, then they are vulcanising with other than sulphur. I`ve done my A$180. >.<

The sulphur smell will be worse if the mouthpiece is left out and is exposed to sunlight.
always use the mouthpiece cover and if you leat your sax out then make sure tha mouthpiece is put away in a drawer/pocket or in your case.

If you are giving anymore mouthpieces away I'll have 'em

These are Selmer C* MPCs and Griff136 you have identified the cause because I never put them away. I have a little table with the tenor, alto and soprano crooks laid out with the adjacent MPCs and reeds. Some days the sun even shines on the table in the late arvo.
I`ve tried the hot soap and water wash to deodorise them but it only makes them worse.
Now come on team there must be heaps of these smelly ones around; has anyone come up with a successful deponger?

Thanks nachoman I`ll try that if what I`m doing does`nt work. As chemist I`ve had a lot of success in industry with chlorine as a deodoriser. I`m using a weak sodium hypochlorite solution and so far its looking promising. Thing is tho` it is my new MPC which is only starting to smell, so on a really bad one it may not work.

I have the old Selmer Soloist C** Alto mpc and yes I tend to agree.

70 forms of bacteria can live in your mpc and can stay active for up to 5 months: http://www.crizz.co.uk/micro/first.html

Blow, never suck! Seriously.

Sterisol germicide spray can be used on the mpc, ?2.95p: http://www.dawkes.co.uk/accessory_pics/alu050.jpg

I occasionally use Milton Sterilising tablets (get them from Chemists for cleaning babies bottles). Half a tablet in a glass of water and drop the mpc in overnight.

Does discolour an ebonite mpc though, particularly if you use warm water - they go brown.

regards, Phil
