A blast from the past, the roaring twenties to be exact, check out this little snippet found on the German sax forum, posted by kingconn - one of the moderators, I gratefully robbed it with many thanks, I'm sure you'll all love it.

Any offers on how to pronounce his name?

Funnily I first heard of him a few days ago, on the SOTW forum 🙂

Bonjour Roger,
He was born in the states, but his parents were German, so the pronunciation in English would be approximately: Viederft - however I have seen his name spelt - Weidoeft in which case the pronunciation would be: Vhyderft. (I spent five years learning French and ended up living in Germany. duh!)

He made the saxophone very popular in the twenties, an amazing technician, and such a beautiful tone.

In the U.S. the name is pronounced (mispronounced) "Wee-doft" and "Why-doft". Being of German descent myself (as well as Scottish and Welsh) I cringe when I hear it pronounced that way. Still many of you would cringe if you heard it pronounced correctly! 😛

I know many of you have been worrying yourselves silly about not knowing why Rudy Wiedoeft is often referred to as - Kreisler of the saxophone - and what on earth does Kreisler mean, well it's not a Kreisler at all, it was lo and behold Mr. Kreisler who was an extraordinarily virtuoso Austrian violinist. So calling Mr. Wiedoeft - Kreisler of the saxophone - is actually making a comparison. I'm sorry it took me so long to find out, now I can at last get on with some transcribing which is long overdue.

There was a 'method book' that he wrote too, right? I remember reading that the young Parker was given a copy by his mum. Is that still in print?
