Rs2sensen's "Diary"

holy cow, you busy man!
Somebody needs a vacation lol
Congrats though. I love that feeling when you know you have done really well.
you make me jealous about that room you were in. I've never heard my sax like that, but someday...I will someday 😛

congratulations again!

Ha ha, when do I sleep? Very good question. I actually haven't lately. But...who needs sleep? Kind of like eating, it's only necessary some of the time...

Paul, do you know if the concertos you mentioned have specific names? I took a quick look for the Phil Woods one, but didn't find anything. I'm sure it's out there, I probably just need to take more time.

Thanks for all the congrats, I certainly appreciate it! In my next free moment I'll record myself and post it, although it will have to be with my computer microphone. At my mother's house in Wisconsin I have a small "recording studio" (4 track digital recorder, PA system, etc.), but I won't be there for a couple weeks.

I bought a bunch of new music last weekend, but I'm too lazy to go look it up and post the titles. Maybe tomorrow...

About a week ago, I received a phone call from a friend begging me to come play at his church (he's Lutheran) for a Pentacoste performance, mass, whatever it is. He said they had some musicians decide to go into retirement, and he was in a really tight spot. So, although I am not religious in the slightest, I said sure, and I thought it would be fun.

The first rehearsal was last Tuesday, and it was quite horrible. I must admit that although my sightreading skills are pretty good, I am not good at comprehending chord symbols and dealing with music theory stuff. And, I was playing out of a vocal part, which I needed to transpose to Eb on the spot (I was really really regretting not having gotten a C Melody yet). So...all my improvised solos were out of key, and I just sounded bad. The music is fun stuff. Not quite gospel, but definitely upbeat and optimistic.

I looked through the music, looked up all the chords and transposed them, and now have everything fairly straight. I actually wrote out a solo for one section (just 8 bars, I'm hoping to memorize it so it looks like I'm doing improv), and I'm hoping I'll have time to write out everything else that needs to be done by a 3 o'clock rehearsal tomorrow. Unfortunately, I'm taking my SAT exam, as well as 3 SAT subject tests (Literature, US History, World History). Which means, I'm probably going to have to speed from the test to the rehearsal, so I'm not sure if I'll have time to write anything. I'm hoping that now that I have all the chords down I can pull something out of my butt.

Anyways, I'll fill in more on music stuff tomorrow. i really should be getting to bed...

I've only played twice in the past two weeks. I've been managing a new restaurant near Madison, Wisconsin, and have been working from 7am until 10PM every day. Unfortunately, I am staying an hour away from the restaurant, so I'm really gone between 6am and 11pm.

I did take an hour off last week, when I was invited to attend a performance by the local community band. They were...ok. It was alright, but not particularly enjoyable. I did get a chance to meet their sax players, one of which played a solo using a glass mouthpiece, which was interesting to see.

In about a week I'm done with the restaurant stuff, and will get myself back into the full swing of music stuff. I've greatly been missing it. I'm also rather excited...I've decided to sell me car (a 1997 Mazda 626) and I'm looking at getting something new. I want a convertible 🙂

Hey - just been reading through some of your posts and was wondering how you went with the braces off?

I had mine taken off a few years back now, but having them off played absolute havock with my embouchure (had them on a fair while) something which I only managed to get almost a year afterwards. I scanned your posts and couldn't see anything about it, so assumed you'd done OK. lucky so and so. Nah really glad you didnt have problems - wasnt pretty.

As for the workaholic thing I know just where your coming from - me and several musician friends all have very similar times to you. But its what keeps us from being bored. We'd complain if we had nothing to do. 🙂

I honestly noticed very little difference with my playing when I got my braces off. In fact, I would even say that if there was a difference, it was that my tone improved! Then again, I'm sure that was more the result of practice!

Anyways...updates...
Bought a 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix SE to replace the mazda. A nice upgrade.

Bought an early 1920s Lyon and Healy C-Melody from Dr. Sax Woodwinds in Madison, WI. It's a Buescher Stencil, and the body of the horn looked miserable when I bought it, although the pads were in good shape (had been repadded). I had the High F pad replaced, bent one key slightly to fix a leak, and had a great horn. I also polished her up, and electrostatically replated the areas where the silver had been worn off. Right now I've got several keys off for more cleaning, but when I'm done I'll post pics. I'm really enjoying playing C-Mel, it's no alto, but I may actually like it better than Bb Tenor.

I finally fixed my soprano. The octave key had been messed up, and I took it apart a few months ago. Required some bending, and oiling, and assorted adjustment, but I got her playable. I really need to get a good new or vintage sop soon...Need to get a Bb Tenor first though! I've rather enjoyed the C-melody refurb, and am knowledgeable on repadding and assorted sax repair. Maybe I'll find a good "project horn" to work on.

Just won an audition for a fun sax solo with my marching band. We're doing a Fiesta/Latin/Spanish themed show, and one of our songs is an arrangement of a Chick Corea piece, La Fiesta. Should be a fun solo.

I also just got a request to play sax with a band at the school talent show. I've never been too interested in Talent Shows, since most of the people performing don't have talent, but the group that asked me is fairly good, so I said I'd do it. The song they're playing is called "Here We Go" by Dispatch. I'm not exactly into that genre of music, but it should be an interesting experience. The original sax solo on it was played by Craig Dreyer, on tenor. So, I'll either have fun and play it on C-Mel, borrow my friend's Mark VI, or change it up and use an alto or sop. Since I don't have sheet music, I'll just go with whatever I feel like! 😛

The past week I've been doing Marching Band stuff all day. It's been tiring, but I'm really enjoying being the saxophone section leader. The sax players this year are quick to learn, and very friendly. I've been getting compliments from the staff saying that the saxes have been by far the most prepared section this year. Makes me proud of them, and myself 🙂. During our lunch break, I've taken to practicing in the local woods. Very relaxing.

I've already been approached on if I'm interested in playing the sax part for the school musical this coming year. I think they're trying to get to me early, as last year I toyed with them a bit as to if I would do it or not. We had originally planned on doing "Chicago," but we couldn't get the rights to it. The next choice is "Cabaret," which I've never seen. The past three years I've done "The Hot Mikado," "West Side Story," and "Grease."

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
