Replacing Vintage Springs

I'm looking at replacing the springs on my c-melody, as many are very old and starting to break (and, the horn will be apart next week for a repad). I have noticed that the springs used are quite strong compared to modern horns, resulting in a heavier action. Can I use modern (ie. lighter) springs on the horn, or should I try to find an alternative?

Modern springs such as stainless steel or wire springs can be used but will not necessarily be lighter. Obviously the larger in diameter the sring is the stronger it will be. You could try putting steel/yamaha type springs on there and not tension/bend the spring as much as the original.
let us know how you get on.
