Hi,
Please recommend to me an excellent tech' that specialises on vintage horns that will carry out a re-pad & a full service on my beloved Martin "The Martin" tenor.

I live just on the outskirts of Birmingham, & to travel to get this work done is no problem.

Your help will be appreciated.
Thanks - Mike

Two omportant things to keep in mind when you are going to renovate your "The Martin Tenor": Thin pads (4,0 mm or thinner) and keep the keyheights low. I have played and look at some Martins that were not playing well because the tech had worked as it was a Selmer Yamaha sax.... . Some techs just carry one thickness when it comes to pads. I use to buy my on pads and resonators to make sure that I get the right things. I buy the best quality when it comes to pads and I use Reso-Tech resonators sterling silver or brass. The cost i high but you'll get no corrosion/plating problems on your pads. Of course, this is just if are using metal resonators.

It's time for me to repad my bari and I'm going to send the sax to Tenor Madness. They are very good on Martins. Even Bob Ackerman, New Jersey, are treating Martins saxes right. But I'm sure there are lots of other excellent techs all around the world that can work on a Martin.

Recommend Griff of DG Music, Exmouth. The absolutely amazing difference he made to my horn when I was losing confidence revived me, seen him sort a Mauriat for a fellow Breakfast Room member, he manufactured and fitted a key where there aint no keys on a Morris friend's recorder, he's enthusiastic about his work and a nice guy.
Nice trip down the M5 for you and very reasonably priced and likes vintage saxes.
Wish I was getting paid for this but just one of his many satisfied customers. He's also a BR member.

Agree, Griff seems to be a good tech. And he is also in the UK! No big cost for shipping.

I recommend Bob Ackerman and Tenor Madness because I have Martins that are renovated by them. As I said before; there are lots of other capable technicians.

I can't honestly say specialises in vintage horns but 3 recommendations from me.

1) Steve Howard (try shwoodwind on google) on personal experience.
2)Willie Garnet who has a wide spread reputation now working out of Ritz music.
3)Equally, I have to mention that Griff has helped me beyond the call of duty on a couple of occasions and I've never even mety the man.
