I wish I had been given this when I started learning. It was published in 1983 and the presentation shows this, the photographs, font and general presentation look almost like a photocopy, however this small book (32pages, A4/letter size and paperback) is little gold mine for the beginner.
The topics are care and maintenance, reeds and mouthpieces, embouchure, tuning, tonguing, tone quality and range, and methodology of practice. Each section has exercises to illustrate and teach the points made in it and there are eight pages of etudes at the end. I would estimate that 75% of the book is playing exercises.
Chapter 3 on playing position has good though old photographs, but also has pictures of what not to do.
The part that I found most useful at my stage is the chapter on special fingerings which among others things covers those awkward Bb changes and gives simple rules that can be called upon while playing. The same chapter covers other potentially awkward fingerings and trills. The trills are fun to learn.
Anyone just starting or with only a few months behind them, especially if they do not have a tutor will find this a useful buy. It is published by Alfred Music Publishing Co. and the ISBN -10 is 0-7692-2678-7. I got mine from Amazon for Ca$12
