I have recently conceded that my 16 yr old YTS875 custom just might need an overhaul soon! 😱
Out of interest it has had 2 neck corks and about 4 replacement pads in that time.... (cheap and nasty and unreliable you see?) >:)

I would estimate that it has average 4 hours playing time per week over this period.
We've grown together and year upon year it suits me more. It could be that I am simply able to get more and more from it but I fear losing some of what I am able to manipulate from it tonally when I finally take the plunge.
Curious about the hot rodding options available in the form of resonators and pad colour materials e.t.c.
I almost want to experiment.
Whats your take?

if i thought something was really cool on a horn i had no intention of reselling id probably give it a whack, but im not in any hurry

mostly just seems like another GAS outlet to me

if you go onto SOTW then you can find buckets of info and opinions on this topic.

There are folks that swear their saxes blow far better with their new turbo nutter silverplated diamond encrusted resonators with their aligator belly skin pads.

I think - and there are many who agree - that its not so much the type of pad and resonator but how they are fitted - an overhaul/repad should at the end of it have the sax playing sweet regardless of the pads/resonator combination - I am of course excluding the cheap nasty chinese pads that have no more than cotton wool inside them rather than felt.

as regards anything that isn't considered standard - If I had the time I would definately try toptone pads. I was sent 3 to trial a few years back - i telephoned the company and asked for a complete set otherwise the trial would be worthless. - they didnt send me any more - although I have played on a TJ custom tenor which had been fitted with the toptone pads and it really blew well and the action was fast due to the significant decrease in padweight.

I also wanted to replace the original white pads fitted to my King saxello (that's the bell of it in my picture).

In the end I decided on Kangaroo "roo" pads from Curt at musicmedic.com. These worked extremely well and I was impressed by their firmness.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
