Otto link tone edge 7

Hi all, got a Otto Link tone edge 7 with my SA-8, Now it mostly makes a muffled fizzing sound, almost like there is a gallon of saliva in it. :x Dont have the same prob with the Jupiter mouthpiece

It has a 1 1/2 reed and a BG leather/rubber "standard" lig where as the Jupiter is using a 2 1/2 reed and a no name rubber lig

Is it me or do I need to do something different? postion, embouchure, just practice etc.

It basically needs more air to be put down it as the mouthpiece has a larger gap between reed and mouthpiece. The softer reed will help though it obviously isn't enough at the moment. Your Jupiter mouthpiece id probably around a 5 in terms of Ottolink sizes so you've jumped up four sizes straight away!

Try starting on a G as loud as you can. get a nice solid G and then slowly work your way down the scale a semi-tone at a time holding the notes for as long as possible. i.e. half your breath on the first then the other half on the second, try to get slightly louder as you move towards the end of the note too. This will improve your tone, lung capacity and air support too.

It will take some time but you shouldn't change your embouchure really or press any harder/softer than normal.

I've tried a similar mouthpiece as yours eventhough I use a #6 Super Tone Master and had the same results when I started using it. I agree that the 7 may be too wide at the moment but it takes time to get used to it. One thing I found out was that I needed a 2 1/2 reed to get it to play without the wet, spitty sound so try using a slightly harder reed (#2) until you can play without the spitty sound but can control it. At this point for you - it's a matter of finding the right reed for it while being able to control it.

Also, your embochure may need a little more developing or a slight adjustment, not necessarily more air but a little less bite and a little more push of the diaphram. That works for me but give it a try.

Wow, upgrade fella... that thin piece of wood won't be helping you at all. If you're using a 2.5 on a different mouthpiece, why the 1.5? A 7 Link isn't very open.

It probably is compared to the standard mouthpiece that comes with the TJJ.

Having a very small opening isn't going to allow his embouchure to progress very far even with a 2.5 reed so it's probably a hard blow.

I've only in the last week moved to a ZZ 3 with a STM 6*

Know what you mean about the fizzing spitty sound Col9 - that's all I could get out of a Beechler 8 when I first got it (bought blind for about 22 quid off the bay during my experimental phase) unless I practically burst a lung blowing it. Since getting used to a wider opening via a Selmer Soloist, I've recently started using the Beechler again and I find it plays really nicely now, and sounds lovely.

Thats good, its just me I had feeling it would be as are most issues I'll come up against for the next 12 months. The Vandoren 1 1/2 reed came with the sax from Hanson as did a 2 and I already had a few 2 1/2 's but its a constant fizz at the minute with any of them.

I'll add it to the "TO LEARN" list.
