now i bought a new mouthpiece do i need to upgrade the Ligature ?

im now playing on my yamaha mouthpeice with Rico 1.5S and things are shaping up.now how important is the ligature? i have read that it can vastly improve sound? I know that you shouldnt have it too tight as it affects the reed vibration. do you think I need to upgrade my ligature now I have a half decent mouthpiece?

Big bone of contention there, Mick. Some people will swear that a ligature has a big effect on the sound, some will say the lig makes very little difference as it's only there to hold the reed on. Another argument is that it can make the reed more responsive to what you're trying to achieve, which may affect the sound, but only because you feel more comfortable with your setup.

If you are using the standard metal-with-two-screws type, it'll do the job fine imho, but may cause some scoring along the top of the reed where the two ends meets, especially if you are prone to over-tightening your lig.

Personally, I use the Rovner type of ligature as I find them quick, easy and non-damaging to reeds, plus as an 'upgrade' they won't break the bank.

If you're happy with what you've got I'd say stick with it, as even if the ligature does change the sound debateable, see above) it's way down the list of things in your setup that can change your sound - far more important to the sound coming out of the horn are your mouthpiece, your reed, and you.

cheers bobbyg youre always the one to the rescue. Just been listening to some of them posted soundclips so i added Smothered to the collection. its on my site not sure you listened to it I know you went to my site 🙂 . I pplay all instruments on it and vocals lol no sax tho :-( im loving the sax the more I practice the less I want to put it down.
