Non-Jazz Saxophone Musical Leanings?

Don't shoot me ~ I love to play classical music on the tenor sax ~ especially Bach ~ used to play in a quartet and it was amazing... 😛

I prefer playing classical to jazz I definitely get more from it. Some Jazz is great but it doesn't really move me to try and play it. Now big band on the other hand, I cant wait to try that.

Main influences were Junior Walker, and Stan Getz. Later Jan Garbarek. Certainly not the traditional stuff but enjoy 60's Jazz and more contemporary Scandinavian, modern British and North European in general.

Classical Sax just seems wrong to me - but I do like oboes.

I love classical music played on sax, but equally rock, jazz, swing (Glenn Miller etc) and Wizzard/Roxy/Floyd (my namesake - mr Parry)

The world of the classical quartet is so underated, Jean Francais, Jean Absil, Paul Harvey, John Tilsden-Ellis, Eugene Bosa, and of course all the classic that have been arranged for quartet.

The instrument is so versatile, the vast majority of people, including sax players, don't realise just how versatile this instrument is or can be.

I love it all really, when something new comes long it just reinforces my faith in the instrument.

Paul Harvey experimented with mediaeval pieces on quartet and it sounds really authentic, better in fact than the original shawms etc.

The London Saxophone Quartet and English saxophone Quartet were the premier quartets in the UK in the 70's and 80's, sadly I don't think either exist now.

There, not such a rough time eh?

Surely it is the connection of the Saxophone finding a voice in the 20th century coinciding with the emergence of Jazz and it's influence on popular music via the likes of Gershwin.

The other point is that when I started I wanted to hear the instrument played really well. All the best were Jazzers, whether they be Charlie Parker, Lester Young or whoever.

As for playing music that is not commonly associated with that instrument, I like to try to play Elgar's Cello Concerto on Fender bass guitar. It works very well, sometimes 🙂

Elgars Cello concerto works exceptionally well on Baritone, they sound so similar.

That was Red Price, tenor player with Ted Heath and also Lord Rockingham's Eleven. My saxophone teacher for a while.

Did Rockingham's deliberately get that raunchy sound from deliberately de-tuned saxes as MM alleged at the time? MM also claimed that Tubby and Ronny were approached but refused on the grounds that it was hard enough playing in tune let alone out of it.
Being old is hell.

Yes, It was Red Price that told me about the tuning:
"We tuned one tenor flat and one tenor sharp, one baritone flat and t'other sharp....that's how we got that f***ing awful sound"

I'm trying to learn it as we speak...and your not wrong :laugh: Wesley made a fine job of it (probably one of my all time favorites)
And a quick did you know...Wesley McGoogan sadly ended his sax playing career when he had an accident with a power saw. (I'm not sure how accurate this is, but I thought I'd mention it any way!)
