Accessories Leather gig bags

Just caught up with this topic again.

Luluna; that looks like a good solid case, are you getting one?
Just one thing that bothers me, 600 denier ballistic material!
A girl I used to know wore tights made out of that stuff, I think?

Half Diminished - whats wrong with the protec case your mauriat came in?

gig bags are great for people like me i.e. repairers, as they dont give much protection. you've only got to take your sax on a bus/tube/train and catch your bag on one of the upright handles or a seat and then your bell is out of alignment - a nice 50 - 80 quid job for me!!

if you must get a leather bag then get on of these

(scroll down to the leather option) I have one and theyre really sturdy

IMHO your far better off with a strudy case and spend the dough you would have spent on a new gig bag, on some more lessons to improve your tone, technique and overall playing - a bag may look cool but your far better off sounding cool!

Call me old fashioned, but i just dont get the whole gig bag thing! A hard case is the only and safest way to go in my opinion.

Its like wearing slippers for work when you are supposed to be wearing steel toe caps! Too late afterwards.

Regards, Mike.

Thanks, was looking at the Bach as an option. I can't justify the cost of the Reunion Blue bags and I wanted something a little lighter anyway and I would guess they are heavy.

Bummer!

ah but can you justify the cost of all those extra trips to the repairer.

I have a customer (no names) who earns a living from playing the sax, she visits me at least one a month cos her sax aint quite right.

it only takes a tiny knock on the bell to put the low notes out of action, or a slight knock on the low Eb/low C bottom key post to put everything below D out of action.

she loves her gig bag and I love the steady income

If you just take your sax out of the house once a week the original case i just fine even if it's an old one. It gives enough protection for a carride to the local pub gig or a lession. If you go by bus or bike you probably need a better case. Hiscox or SKB (oblong case) is good replacement cases. The Hiscox fits most saxes even, the saxes the the bellkeys on left side.

If you are the kind of player who is carring your case yourself and also is traveling, the flight cases are the best thing. Walt Johnson, SKB and Alligator cases are good. Most airlines companies allow you to bring your ss, as or ts in the cabin if it's in shaped/flight case.

I think it's important to have the keys fixed when you transport your sax. Keyclamps is very handy, but why are they so expensive? Rubber wedges or corks under the keyfeets is also working. Don't forget the low C, C#, B and Bb keys.

I'm feeling such a fool now :blush: I wish I had never started this thread. ;}

I didn't realise how flimsy these instruments are and I can't justify spending £300 plus on a leather bag I don't need.

My mate has just got his MK6 Tenor back from repair's,he tried to throw his leather gig bag onto his shoulder and missed, sax went flying and hit the ground.Sax was a big mess, the bell was pushed right down and very bent and it was a right off. He's went back to a Hiscox hard case now.

:thumb:I am using an Glenn Cronkhite leather gigbag for my Yanagisawa B-902. I am really satisfied with it. I read on the SOTW about it on the search for Reunion Blues comments. Carrying the bari is more safer in my opinion. The bari can be carried on the back by walking or by bike. The mass is much reduced, by good protection, and so the instrument can veritable well be transported on such things like stairs, small hallways full of corners, etc. I wish I would have a second one for my Conn 12M, which rests in a Protec case, which is much more bulky. Glenn Cronkhite is the founder and former owner of Reunion Blues. The quality is outstanding good and the price nearly the same.

Since this thread's been brought back from the dead, I'll add my tuppence worth.

Since the original case for my Yanag bari is a huge heavy coffin the beast has traveled to the last 300 or so gigs in a cheapy Precieux gig bag - usually in a car but occasionally in the back of van with all the other gear. I'm sure you all throw up your hands in horror but, honestly, it's been fine - and just to send you into a state of complete apoplexy I'll casually mention that the bari stand I use on stage cost about 20 quid.

I'm sure if I could justify the pennies I'd buy a nice leather one but, I dunno, I'd probably go for one of these.

I have a Precieux black leather alto gig bag i use and i think has much better padding than a reunion blues bag.Its a great well made cool looking real leather gigbag.I would not use a gig bag for my beloved Borgani tenor though,no way.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
