Saxophones Is your #1 sax a tool or relationship?

I love my sax, but it don't love me.

Well. I asked Gertrud (my SBA), but she remained silent. Maybe because I asked when I practiced with my Mark VI.

But she aint no lady. nothing ladylike about a SBA. he/she is a beast just pretending.

My alto is my oldest musical friend, but I don't love her

From some of the posts on here instead of 'Taming the Saxophone' Pete should have called it something like 'The Complete Guide to Sax Affairs'.

I put a piece of rubber tubing over my RH thumb hook when I want to practice "safe sax".

Clearly it's a relationship thing then. But moral standards are not that high....

For me it's definatey a relationship,as I only play for my own pleasure and don't try to earn a living with it where I could imagine it might become a tool, but even then after enjoying my sax for so long I'm sure the relationship side of things would still be there ,and looking after it like a loved one would be even more important

I form attachments to some 'tools', not others. e.g. I earn my money in IT, but I don't think I've ever had a computer I felt any attachment to. On the other hand, I've had a number of cars, and I'm definitely attached to Helena (my current MX5 🙂). My SCUBA gear keeps me alive, but tbh I don't really feel any attachment to it. Painting, nope, I'll quite happily replace any of my brushes etc.

Now, sax...yes. I've tried many at all levels and I've never yet found one that I would swap my tenor for. I either didn't like the sound (yani and sequoia), or didn't like the action (most student models and a couple of 'vintage' models). I also don't particularly like my alto (hence my teacher has it on permanent loan - it's more use to him than stuck in my attic). But my tenor, yeah I'd be sad if that got stolen say (I've even tried another of the same model, and it just wasn't as good, my teacher says mine is a one-off).

So, yeah, tool that I have a relationship with 🙂

Number 3 as far as tools go.. lead guitar and 4 string bass guitar close first and second. But the saxophone is probably the instrument I love the most. My 7 string bass is my second most loved instrument. I have a custom-made Conklin 4-string Bass that was made just for me and just for neoclassical metal. Been with me for 30 years travel all over the country with me. Hangs on my wall in the house it is retired. I never play it anymore but I have a great fondness for it. One day I may take it and have all the wires redone and have it rebuilt and bring it out of retirement.
