iPod advice, please

I started with a 3rd generation iPod a few years ago. My experience is that you are dying for something to go wrong with it, like battery fade, for an excuse to upgrade to a newer model that has colour / video / photos / bigger memory / better battery / phone / coffee maker but the darn thing just goes on and on.......

I gave up waiting in the end and just bought a new one!

I love my ipod and it was so easy to set up!

Like Chris I am now wondering how I can justify getting a newer one when my ipod mini has worked so well for the last two or three years.

I've never had an MP3 either, but I decided to treat myself and have just ordered a Sandisk Sansa E280, and a decent set of headphones. I'll let you know how I get on with it. Eighty quid for the E280 and ?17.50 for the 'phones off Amazon - pretty cheap.

The associated software (undeservedly) used to have a poor reputation, but I find it better than iTunes. Sony does have a proprietary compression format but you don't have use it unless you want to cram a fraction more onto the device. It will store everything as standard MP3's if you wish. It will also read the proprietary iTunes format, should you already have downloaded using that in the past.

Excellent sound quality from the headphones that come bundled with the device. (A colleague refused to ever use MP3 players believing the speakers could never get close the quality of his hi-fi at home - until he heard the sony.)

Oh, and its easy to use.

Like any other MP3 player it will take time to load all your tracks (unless you already have them stored on your PC in which case it will do it automatically for you - just let it run overnight.

You can tell I think they're good. 😉 And no I'm not on commission.

I too am of the Sony Clan. The software is a little pain in the butt, but once you get used to its quirks, it is actually very good. The sound quality is unsurpassed. The battery life is awesome (around 25 hours new)

My one is a NW-A3000 which will probably be a little cheaper than the iPods now that Sony don't seem to be making too many of them any more. 20Gb, great sound and tough as old boots

I got my SanDisk E280 delivered on Friday (having ordered it at 18:30 on Thursday!). It's great - easy to use, intuitive controls, sounds great. Highly recommended.

I've had a 3rd generation ipod for 4 years now. Every time the battery starts losing its charge I buy a new battery take it apart and put the new one in!

I've also just bought the new clip on ishuffle for jogging..its great!
