John Dowland, one of England's greatest song writers... was prone to a melancholic turn. This is one of his most well-known (and the underlying tune with it's Latin name 'lachrymae' (tears) spawned many copies). My singing teacher used to get me to sing this, but as a baritone not a counter-tenor as here
