Saxophones I Pulled The Trigger. New Vintage Sax Coming To Me For My Birthday.

Jazz Is All

You gave special mention to the switchable G# mechanism. as you may be interested, here is a copy of Couesnon's 1935 patent for it.

Fantastic stuff! The more I look, the more it must be modern, but the font really bothered me. The logo is not as intricate as earlier versions. There is no definition of the bundled wood of the earlier fasces image. I do wish there was a catalogue or two to refer to, from over the years. I have a 1934 catalogue, and not seen reference to any later than that.

Is the next style of of engraving from 1978 etched? I have a recollection newer ones are, but can't find an image on-line.

Cheers

Chris
Hi Chris, yes the latest logo (18091 and 3 higher serials) appears etched. The font used is a much more modern sans-serif. I am hesitant to post the pictures, which I retrieved from original sales posts on ebay and leboncoin, there may be copyrights or other limitations on use. I’ll start a private conversation with you.

I’m going to start a thread. “ 50 ways to safely get the goods in the door“ or “ buying that ONE more SAX without getting busted”.
My wife is more likely to have a moose. Holidays would be cooked ham. Ouch !
You gave away the date. Be prepared for a good roasting :D
Well my friend I have my fingers crossed for you. 7 to 10 days on shipping approaching the holidays !
I await your happy dance :happydance:

fwiw, I found a tenor I really need two days ago. Sub $300 including shipping. Needs overhaul, many months of entertainment.
Xmas is coming.....asked my daughter to grab it. Haven’t tried this approach in a few years. I didn’t buy one more, she did :w00t:
The seller lives in the South of France between Marseille and Saint Tropez. It's in fact not a very far drive or train ride from here, but know Postal services they often send packages all around Robin's barn towards the East to get to someplace West. USPS is notorious for that routine.

Years ago when I had 3 saxes hidden in the woodworking materials closet I never had any problem breaking them into the home scene slowly and carefully. Now however since my wife and son are both at home all the time, there is no way to sneak anything into the house. I'm just going to say it's my birthday present from a long-time saxophone-playing admirers and avoid mentioning that it's me. With one sax I said that I had it on loan from a buddy to try out and see if I liked it. My wife forgot that detail and so never asked about why months later it was still in the house.

The $300 sax sounds good;even with an overhaul you'll have a low-priced sax. What does a basic overhaul with pads generally go for there? I just looked at what some of my saxes cost me to buy and rebuild back in the good ofd days and recently.

In 2008 I bought my Silver Pan Am Conn Chu Berry Soprano from a seller named Curlytaildog in the USA (my EB name at the time was Buhaina's Delight it seems) for $417 total including shipping and insurance. At the time the Euro was very high so that was only 268€. On top of thatI piad another 56.34€ in duties to the Spanish Corsairs for a total of 328.51 euros.
The sax was a cherry silver one with all the original white kid pads, many of which actually still were good. Of course after 80 years it needed to be redone so it cost me an additional 370€ at Sax-On. The grand total was just 700 euros which at that time was the equivalent of $448. You couldn't beat that with a stick but sadly the exchange rate now is nowhere that great and inflation has driven the price of tech work up too. If it weren't I'd still be buying from the USA maybe even with the highway robbery of Customs duties and tax.

No, it's a town called Évenos. The guy's name is Lolo. I have a friend here who plays trumpet whose name is Lolo. I forgot what it's a nickname for.
Evenos is just outside of Toulon, to the north west. Not far from Bandol... Excellent wine there. Jim Harrison keeps talking about Bandol wine in his late books, with reason!

I thought I wrote this but can't find it now. It turns out that the date of arrival that eBoy quoted was from yesterday to Thursday.....but next Thursday, not tommorw as I mistakenly assumed. Usually they give you a window of dates but not that far apart....on Amazon at least. So now I'm totally in the dark as to when to expect it because the dumb La Poste Coissimo tracking page only shows where it was last Thursday and is not being updated. It's been that way since then and never updates. The Spanish Correos tracker doesn't recognize the number, so I am in the dark totally. Not sure if that means it is lost or just that the pandemic has screwed up their operations like everything else run by all the government services.

This creates a problem for me because I normally sleep with earplugs in my ears and thus can't hear the door intercom buzzer. When I'm expecting a package, like from Amazon, I don't put them in and just suffer a night of sleep that could be disturbed by one of the following possibilities, a) the city recycling truck emptying the glass bin on the street nearby b) a phone call from some scam artist saying they're from Microsoft (I have a Mac) c) our son banging around at 7 a.m. because he has early Uni classes online or d) my wife's loud snoring. She's getting back at me for all the years my snoring woke her up. Anyway, if I miss the delivery, I'll then have to go and pick it up at the P.O. and that these days is a big PITA...no parking and long slow widely spaced lines outside the place.

What a PITA.

See, Amazon is so good that they create unmatched expectations from all other suppliers, including the poor old Lolo from Evenos!

It's kind of unfair. But I know exactly what you mean. With Az, I can almost see the parcel arriving. They let me know when the delivery man is getting close! And I can tack his/her position almost in real-time! That's insane. :w00t:

That's how they play us getting us all addicted to the quality of service that no competition can match.

La Poste even changed their delivery status from precise to vague!

They are particularly bad for the last stretch to you home, as far as I can tell. So now from a certain point they just tell you they are doing their best to get it to you as quickly as possible...

I feel for you @Jazz Is All

Four days till BD. So this will be a late birthday present or early Christmas present. Still good.
Any of your neighbors have a electric dog collar? The kind the owner holds the remote and when the dog barks you electrocute the dog. Could be a good fix for your sleeping dilemma. Just tape the remote over the doorbell.

I thought you were going to say put the collar on the wife...

This was so true I was laughing while feeling like crying. That's exactly what their message said for 5 whole days since the last entry last Thursday....I translated the French with Google and it informs me quite reassuringly that, Your package is in transit on our logistics platforms to be delivered to you as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately that gibberish is not reassuring at all but perhaps the translation is at fault and not the original text. I mean, WTH does "in transit on our logistics platforms" mean in a real sense.I know what a platform is as in a construction platform and a diving platform and according to the dictionary in transportation a platform is generally: a raised structure along the side of a railway track where passengers get on and off trains at a station. So what the hell is a logistics platform? Well I looked it up and here is the technical definition that will elucidate me:

The best known definition of logistic platform is probably that provided by the European Association of Freight Villages EUROPLATFORMS, as “a defined area within which all activities relating to transport, logistics and the distribution of goods, both for national and international transit, are carried out by various operators. It is run by a single body, either public or private, and is equipped with all the public facilities to carry out the above mentioned operations”.

In simpler terms, a logistic platform can be defined as a specialised area with the infrastructure and services required for co-modal transportation and added value services, where different agents coordinate their activities to benefit the competitiveness of the products making use of the infrastructure. Based on the above definition, it is important to distinguish between different types of logistic platform, according to their operative complexity and operational integration:

Get That? I love the second paragraph that starts "in simpler terms" and then proceeds to repeat the same b.s. but just with different obfuscating vocabulary. Lovely bit of bureaucratic drivel that elucidates nothing. All it made me think of was a bunch of guys with dollies and trolleys endlessly shunting palettes of cartons and freight around the loading platform at some mail facility in the middle of China, France, G.B., Japan or Buttfck-Wherever USA. In other words stuck there and not going anywhere for days until they have enough other freight going to the same location to gang-ship it with. Until then, it's Bob Dylan singing You Ain't Going Nowhere. And of course this is what you get unless you pay the top price for Special Express delivery, which naturally this is not.
I may not work in shipping but I know that even for the lowest class of tracked freight anytime a piece is moved from one place on its trajectory to the next, it is automatically scanned and registered as being there. That is how the tracking page is generated in the first place. In the case of this French System those entries are labelled as Étapes, i.e. steps, as in steps from Évenos to Barcelona, and hEven only nos how many that will be.

Reading this record of the movement (sic) of my saxy box, it is important to keep in mind that prepositions are very important syntactical objects because they give you information about the directional and locational motion of an action or inaction. So I have put them in Bold because as you shall see, they are about the only thing different in all but one of the entries so far.

Looking at Wednesday, November 25 when the seller sent it off it was deposited IN a postal station and then it was in transit ON their logistic platform to be delivered to me as quickly as possible. This is why the next day Thursday, Nov 26 it was now IN their network to be delivered bla bla bla etc etc. Later that same day it was now ON their logistic platform (once again I assume) to be delivered to me bla bla bal and so on. From IN to ON does not to me denote much movement, if any, TOWARDS Barcelona.

Okay, I wasn't born yesterday and while I am not a computer geek or a freight transit controller you can't piss down my back and make me believe it's raining. When packages like this are logged in and have a tracking number they are automatically scanned every Étape of the way. So if there is nothing on this page since Thursday, it can only mean that the package is still in that facility and as yet has gone nowhere. I know this from dealing with packages sent to me by a couple of sellers on Amazon that I didn't know were shipping from Guangdong China. (They had addresses in England to fool you.) Every step the camels took from there to Barcelona, someone shouted Marco and the tracking device printed out Polo, and lemme tell you it was a very slow train coming, 6 weeks slow, which is so slow even Bob Dylan would have cried "Mama get my guns outta the ground, I'm not waiting anymore."

So it seems to have stayed IN transit ON their wonderful Logistic Platform in Évenos to be sent as rapidly as possible TO me. However, again, they never promised me a rose garden, just delivery within 2 weeks. Considering that it's all of 563 Km (a six hour drive) from there to here that makes for many days of sitting around going nowhere, McQuinn. I mean you wouldn't expect for them to move it only 40 Km a day just to keep that schedule when they can do it in jumps. Évenos to Marseille, Marseille to Montpelier, Montpelier to Perpignan, Perpignan to Gerona, Gerona to Barcelona, which is more efficient because it goes only when the vehicle is available. Perhaps tomorrow the Tracking Meister will show that it has finally arrived in Marseille. By boat no doubt.
