How much music?

How much music are you exposed to, other than casually? I know people like Linky Lee are immersed in it at uni, and Pete obviously is as it's his living, but how much time do you get to just listen to music, either for pleasure or for copping licks/riffs etc, without analysing it in a more academic way?

I'm lucky in that I have a job that means I'm in the car for several hours a day so I can listen to what I want then, also if I'm working on an ATM out of the public's view I'll often have the mp3 player on, so all in all I get to hear a lot of music. Even when I'm watching TV I'm very aware of the music being played (even spotted a couple of clips from Mr Lucky recently). Apart from my people, music is the thing in my life, so I'm very fortunate to be able to get so much of it.

i would say 90% of my waking day is exposed to music in some way..firstly i run my own business so i decide what i listen to. my IPOD has about 4 weeks of music on it 80% of that jazz. i have quite a good system to play it through..i also run 1 bandm and i'm a member of 3 others. plus all the dep work. now my 3 year old is taking an interest in playing music, so the cycle begins again..

I'm quite lucky at the moment as I'm a lorry driver and the stereo is seldem quiet!
I worked nights for about four years, and used to take my alto with me so I could practice on my own. Well there I was in a layby at about four in the morning, screaming some solo (as you do) when there is a bang on the cab door! An irate truck driver asked me to politley SHUT THE F*^k UP!!!! Oh well, everyones a critic!
"If music be the food of love" then I'm a nympho!!!

Always have ipod/radio/cd on when at home and in the car. Also have ipod on when walking dogs, singing along - fortunately it's very rural and rarely is anyone subjected to my singing 🙂 Play in 2 bands and one sax ensemble so plenty of playing too.

You'd think that Bob, but I only average 6 hours contact time a week, and then 1 of those is score writing this semester which isn't really listening to music. I also did software analysis which wasn't listening to any music. There isn't any performance modules either, so nothing there. Last semester due to my course I got 4 hours a week of actually listening to music and analysing.

This semester I'll have only 2.

I tend to have my DAB radio tuned to the jazz whenever I'm in my room which is the best way of listening to jazz I've found. I also borrow a lot of CDs from the library and have done 50% of their jazz selection.

The best way is getting out to local pub gigs though. I've seen two fantastic saxophonists locally.

Lee, I was painting various bits of my house for 4 days last week and had theJazz on all the time - some wonderful music, far more Jimmy Smith and other organ artistes than I could possibly hope for (I love that stuff), but don't the same few ads every 10 bl***y minutes get a bit tedious?

My typical week would be to listen to CD's in the car on way to station. I listen to a mixture of jazz or play-along backing tracks.

Luckily I work in central London so I try to go to rays jazz cafe for lunch about once a month. I pick up a copy of jazzwise and then browse/shop I might also browse/shop the sheet music shop , Ardents, for something.

Car music on way home.

Wednesdys is band rehearsal

Most thursdays is jazz club.

I do tend to wake up too early so I have DAB next to my bed with headphones and listen to that for a while usually the jazz or sometimes BBC 7 if the comedy is good.

I practice when I can but not as much as I would like.

Don't have an ipod still using my old cd walkman.

The missus and I love going to shows so I try a steer it towards music. seen the Mikado recently and going the la traviata thursday.

So I think music is most of my life. If I am not playing or listening I am going through scales in my head trying to commit to memory.

This week from tonight onwards I will be on jazz course with Benslow Music Trust so will be playing and eating all day.

Yippee!!!!!!!!!!

Well it's total emmersion for me since we got broadband out in the countryside here in NZ. I can load up my MP3 player with all sort of podcasts, mostly Jazz/Sax related. I work with it one, walk with it on, even sit on the toilet with it on....... although its nice to take it off for Yoga, sleep, showers and eating.

I have found that hosting a Radio show on our local Community access radio station, has opened my listening pleasure although this is exclusively Saxophone music.....

So in short Bob..... it's not how much music that's important,..... but the quality that really counts!

I have to have Classical music quietly all night or I can't sleep. Does that sound strange.? Partners hate it.! But I work from home so ill be watching all the great jazz Sax players on u tube. Must admit I get depressed if there is no music around. Once fitting CCTV in someones house the lady said she hated music. They are out there; morons;.... I had to get to the car and OD on jazz.

But I also like quiet moments to reflect and meditate

I usually have my mp3 player plugged in while I work, on the way to and from work and when I am at home, I like to have some music in the background, so I listen to at least 6 hours a day.

Can sometimes be a problem when I start to feel I have listened to everything I have and have to keep skipping tracks even when the player is on random....

I wake up too Jazz FM, (not for much longer by the sound of things) Drive to work listening to my CD?s. I listen to Jazz FM on tin-tenet all day. Chill out to the radio at night; usually fall asleep with my earplugs in.

Both my girls are involved with music and dance all weekend; I usually sit and listen to them sing musicals to choir practice.
