My trade is a Fibrous Plasterer (look it up)

Just heard today the firm I did my apprenticeship with, 90 years in existence, are near to going bust

Never really been out of work before even in the early 90's

No, don't go back to "platering" - I'd stick with fibrous plastering if I were you 😛

damn these fingers...i cant even type...no wonder i cant play the sax.....anyone got a decent kazoo for sale....its been a long time since i`ve needed a comb so i cant use the old paper/comb as an alternative.

Oh dear. I've just come back from a job I am project managing, refurbishing an 1860's listed building. The budget was running away so I just, ahem, instructed that instead of nice fibrous covings to the ceilings, the builders install standard Gyproc stuff.............. >.<

On a brighter note, you have a great skill. Don't let it lapse - the work will come back.

Phil, I am , there is just not the work about as dooce tells them to put up GYPROC 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡

Things are always slow this time of year but this is worse, it's a small trade and word gets round pretty quick , there are some big jobs coming up this year but are way off

They are doing the Savoy up but too many hands looking for a start

The Studios (films) are starting up again so should taken on a number but it's very hard to get in

Career change, maybe easier to have a sex change 😱

There is a chance at teaching but snotty teenagers 😡

Not my choice for sure. Client demands that we cut the job back to pay for all the rotten windows, asbestos removal, leaking roofs and broken downpipes the architect missed on his survey - and sadly, there you go. I'm afraid it's symptomatic of the building trade right now - those few jobs that are on site are being cut back to the basics.

PS Smiffy - I've put plenty of work the way of good building craftsmen over the years so don't be too hard on me 😉

Incidentally, the thing about teaching snotty teenagers. When my Dad was working, during the final death throes of heavy industry on Teesside, he ended up doing some teaching at the local college (now somehow called a University). Turned out to be highly enjoyable. I suppose the thing with teaching your trade to a class is that if the class is good, it's great. If the class is bad, it's horrid.

The Croydon Mayor has snuffed, knew that loaning Colin the Kalishnakov was a misjudgement and now Big Arry wants to borrow it for a Barclays, any good as a wheelman?
That means there will be a council seat available. Know your political leanings, so why not have a go?
If not, let's have another sax lunch with Colin and see if we can get Phil to joins us. Promise to disarm Colin first even if it does mean breaking a few bones.
In the meantime, you've got the bottle to get through this. It took one company three different redundancy attempts before they got rid of me and my colleagues. Mind you, didn't have the shooter in those days.

Hope you get something soon Garry. It's happened to me before, so I know how you feel, it's a bit worrying, especially if you have a mortgage to pay. Something'll turn up, it did for me. First time I was made redundant was the 80's slump, only for a few weeks before something turned up. Second time, job change, went bus/coach driving, great, wish I'd done it earlier. Wouldn't fancy driving a bus round London though, coaches better. Just an idea, but you have to get your PCV though. Best of luck!!
