Hmmm on my last rehearsal after like 3 hours of playin' with band, suddenly 2nd octave (ONLY) G started to sound as high D...and I managed to go between G and D when I wanted to...when playin just normall...but not when I was playin' hard and loud (Funk atack =DD)...I just lost control....so it sounded as D all of the time when I blew it hard...or reed just got stuck up and had no sound at all...

why can this happen?

Maybe I should try harder reed? Or it's just cos I was tired?

Btw still can do this G-D thingy at home =/

It could be tiredness in your chops causing you to bite a bit on the higher notes, D being a harmonic of G. Also you could be blowing a bit hard causing the reed to 'stick' or 'choke' as you get a bit tired and try to keep up with the volume of the band.

I've had a similar problem in the past when playing with loud guitarists and electric bass, drums etc. Rather than going to a harder reed, I started using a mouthpiece with a wider tip. On the tenor, I now use a Jumbo Java T75 which is very controllable and flexible, and also really loud if I need it, although it plays quietly too. I put the Selmer C* back on and although it has a great sound there's so much less volume there.

Similarly, on alto I've kept the same reed strength but now use a Selmer F rather than the D I was using before.

Going to a wider tip mouthpiece takes a bit of getting used to but I'd say it's definitely worth it.

Cheers, Bob

I think this is a good possibility as well. I've had the same problem with G2 sounding like D3 at the end of a long session and chalked it up to a tired embouchure.

yeah

i suck at harmonics when i mean it but tired chops can make them squeak out

like all my mistakes, i just try to make it seem like i meant it - one of the most important techniques a musician can learn
