Unfortunately there is no "best" beginners sax, but if you let us know what your requirements are, Café members can give you suggestions.
(Probably differing opinions, but that's the nature of the Café.)
Some important questions:
- What size sax? (most people start on alto or tenor, but that is not necessary)
- Do you want a shiny new one, or would you be happy with second-hand?
- Do you have a budget?
If you are not sure what size sax, then it would be worth going into a shop that sells saxophones and trying out an alto and a tenor.
This sounds scary if you are a beginner, but most shop assistants are more than happy to help - just have a honk and wiggle your fingers to see if one feels better than the other. You may be surprised how much more you prefer one.
Rather than buying a saxophone straight away, you could hire one at the start.

I rented an alto for six months to see if it was even possible to play at all. I could have bought that sax with a credit on the rental money, but I opted to buy a middle model Yamaha. If you have a reputable store nearby that has used instruments, that would be a good place to start.

Also...it's a really good idea to engage a teacher, if even for a few sessions. Maybe even every other week. The idea is to learn how to make a few sounds with a technique that will support you down the road.

Wow, thank you for all your responses, after all the research I think I'm looking at an Alto, possibly Yamaha YAS-280. I was just going to buy one (i have no real budget as such) but then decided I would hire one for a few months then I can decide whether I can play and whether I enjoy playing.
I have contacted UK Sax Hire and hoping to hire a new one, would be fab if I could arrange to go and try out a few.
I then need to find a tutor in my area, Near Sheffield.

I know you've sorted yourself out of for now, but do find out where your nearest decent music store is, preferably a woodwind specialist, i.e. not a generic one that stocks lots of guitars and keyboards and has a case with a few token wind and brass instruments in it. They do exist but they won't be in the middle of expensive city centres.

Welcome to the Cafe. I commend you on your choice of instrument. Yamahas are excellent horns. There is so much great advice available here. I’ve improved significantly since joining the fun here.
