Hernia

Diagnosed hernia positive today, it's the lump in the middle at the bottom of the ribcage and above the diaphragm muscles so it's not too serious but has to be operated on and means of course no huffing and puffing for a while. These days it can be done while you wait - same day service - with local anaesthetic, so I figured I'd drop off the body in the morning and pick it up late afternoon. Seriously tho' anyone had experience of this complaint and can give me a few tips and reassurances, being of an extremely nervous disposition the thought of blood, needles and scalpels turns me into a jibbering shaking coward grovelling on the floor.

I've never had one, but I know a few people who have. In fact, my father in law has one at the moment.

Basically, it's not too much to worry about. Most hernias these days are done laparascopically - keyhole surgery. The incision is about the diameter of a finger, and the blood loss will be minimal - something in the range of a tablespoonful to half a cupful. In fact, most are done under a local - you just get sedated a bit to keep you calm, and lie there while they do it. The fact that they've told you it's under local means it's going to be done in this way.

The main advantage of the keyhole surgery is that you only need an odd stitch or two, and without a gaping wound to heal there are far fewer risks of infection, and the healing is far quicker. Should be back blowing the sax in no time.

The surgeon will talk to you briefly about it before and after, and really should put you at ease. Just look forward to playing the sax again.

Aah, thanks for the well wishes Greg, and Jon for the first-hand reassurances, - It's just the thought of lying on a table, albeit conscious in a state of sublime sedation whilst some learned fellow fiddles about in my abdomen with his surgical knives and forks . . . but I probably won't dare to laugh on the day. Deary, deary me, I wish it was over with.

Sounds like an umbilical hernia had mine fixed 2 years ago nothing as smart as keyhole surgery it left a scar 2 inches long, only missed Banjo practice for 2 days and clarinet for a week or so. I know that you will be OK so keep smiling

Good luck with the operation Spike, most of our worries are unfounded. I have no experience with hernia's, and firmly believe a postive attitude about all things does reap huge benefits.

Hey spike,

Hope all goes well.

most of the males in my family have had one (or two, seems its a bit of a family tradition :S) and I've got double ones that are in the process of "popping out". nice. Let us know how it goes and if it affects your playing - bit worried when I get mine sorted I'm not going to be able play for ages.
