Good reeds and bad reeds

As Don, my sax teacher said to me, as I grumbled about trying to find a 'good' reed (among my Jazz Selects) :
"Don't think it will *ever* change!"

(Turned-out it was more of an embouchure problem, this time, but...!)

I s'pose a rule of thumb is that although more expensive reeds can still be inconsistent, they are not as inconsistent as cheaper reeds (and they tend to last longer). This phenomenon is known, among the scientific community, as the 'spectrum of variabilitiness-ness'. Or it should be.
