This should be easy enough. I'm not sure of the normal terminology, so when someone says play "D Dorian" do they mean

[a] A dorian scale on a root of D...hence D E F G A B C D
A dorian scale on the key of D...hence E F# G A B C# D E

Thanks, Phil

A dorian scale happens to have the same notes as the major scale next to it, but they are not really anything to do with each other.

D dorian starts on D - it is a D major scale with a flattened third and 7th

Phil - just learn one sound. As PhilthD says it justs happens to have the same notes as D Major with a b3 and b7.

D E F G A B C D = Dm7 = D Dorian, which happens to have the same notes as C Major as its the second mode.

E F# G A B C# D E = Em7 = E Dorian, which happens to have the same notes as D Major as its the second mode.
