I couldn't think where to put this question, and being a bit techie I may not even get an answer, but..... is it possible to convert an audio CD file, i.e. a track on a CD, into an mp3 file so that I can upload it?

windows media player will do this, just click on "rip" button when playing cd, tick the appropriate box of track required, then "start rip? button at bottom. If you have default settings, it will send an mp3 file to your "my music" folder....

many other options should you not have media player..

Download itunes. I think you just stick the cd in the drive import it and then export the track as MP3. (caveat - I don't use itunes any more so don't take this as gospel but it used to work.)

It may even be the case you can set up the software to always import directly into MP3 rather than the itunes compression format. You can do that with Sony's sonic stage so an alternative is to download that.

Is that the sort of thing you meant?

Hmmmm, I used Windows Media and it converted it to a .wma file

Roger's 1st Law of Computers, coined in the early 80s after the arrival of the first micro computers (I've found it applies in may other areas):

I am being given an iPod for Christmas, I gather, by one of my offspring, so will no doubt have fun with the mysteries of up- and down-loading music files 😱

Some of the older versions of Win Media Player will only rip in .wma format.

Best to download Windows Media Player 11 as it gives you the option to rip in MP3 format as well.

To select MP3 ripping you'll need to go into Tools - Options - Rip Music and choose MP3 from the 'format' drop down menu. Good luck with it 🙂

Or download "audacity" that's a full sound editing package which will record, rip and export MP3 (seem to remember you need to download an extra codec for MP3s but it's all free and easily do-able)

OK, I found how to convert my CDA file to MP3 using Windows Media Player, which offers the option to convert to an MP3 file. I feel such a fool :blush:

Now all I need to do is put it somewhere accessible for public consumption, you lucky people.

Well don't get your hopes up too much Lee - it's not jazz or r'n'b and there's no sax on it, as I recorded it before I started playing sax, but it's the only thing I have on CD and I feel I ought to at least contribute something after all this waffling!
