Security​

It's been quite a couple of weeks what with the worldwide php vulnerability scare (which we survived nicely and mitigated) and then, a DDOS attack on the cafe which happened Wednesday evening about 22:00 UK time, ie 14:00 PST I think.

Some of you may have noticed the page load ground to a halt as the Cafe was bombarded for a while but again we mitigated (that is word of the week).

I believe this was a "dumb" attack, as opposed to more malicious DDOS which can be done to extort money or out of spite by a competitor.

The bats were back again on Halloween and have all gone now (apart from one hanging in there - literally). We thank them for their service. This may well be their last year in action as we upgrade to new software that means some of the old (3rd party) features may not work.

We have finally got around to some changes top the site:

• New home page which hopefully looks a bit nicer and also works better as a portal for finding stuff
• New styling for DM composing. For years now we've had people sometimes put stuff in a public post that they thought was a DM (and vice versa) as the interface can look identical. So the text editor when composing DMs has a different style.

@Pete Thomas @Jeanette your efforts have not gone unnoticed. This last week I noticed the changes hourly/ daily. I took screenshots and didn’t send DM reports as my instinct knew that you two were working on things 🤗.
Here’s just one…

Others in including the verification that I’m not a bot. My posts took some extra effort getting to stick. All gone now.

A sincere thank you to you both for the amazing work you’ve done🙌 🙌. Always so nice to be here knowing someone cares to make the very best site experience possible. A safe & secure place for all to enjoy from real people. Faults included, “working on it” never stated, but we all have confidence from past experiences here. Matters of housekeeping always a priority.
Unlike the other places full of duct tape, band-aids just holding on with AI supposed support.

The error page image changes from time to time. If it is missing do let me know but also on desktop browsers you can right click on the missing image and it should tell you the path and name of the missing image which may help me work out why it’s not there.

Ah and I forgot to say we've made some of the search options more obvious. The Cafe Google search can be very useful finding stuff the forum search doesn't. It can be a good alternative

It's been part of the Advanced search page for years, I just moved it to under the quicksearch as I've discovered it's actually very good.
