Actually I have never been there - it's full of foreigners - hang on, maybe I'm the foreigner? 🙂

Not really a sea change Greg, but it looks like I may be going there for some 'training' soon, since NCR moved their facility from Dundee.

Or is that Dun and/or Dee, Pauly? :laugh:

Hey Bob,

A bit of a culture shock, moving the NCR facility from Dundee to Budapest? From kilts and whiskey, to whatever Hungarian people do - polish the AK47, perhaps? .
You can always take your sax and do a bit of busking by the Danube?
On a serious note - I think there is some wonderful Gothic buildings and historical things there.

Could be - you see, Budapest is actually two cities, one called Buda and the other called Pest, separated by the mighty Danube. Pest lies on the flat terrain of the Great Plain on the east bank while Buda is rather hilly and on the west bank.
Budapest is said to be the most beautiful city in the world whereas Dundee is in Scotland.
Have fun there you old Bohemian. No Rhapsodising though!!

Things is looking up then! No doubt I will have to tear myself away from the 'hanging around in the hotel bar getting ratted' scene that is so prevalent on these courses, but a BIG jazz culture will make it easier.

Not having been on a plane for about 18 years, how do airlines feel about you taking saxophones with?

Airlines actively encourage saxophones to be taken on board. Actually, more saxophones the merrier. Nothing like having a jam session at 35,000 feet, and if you are lucky the pilot may come out of his cockpit and join in with a rendition of "Fly Me To The Moon", and you thought the 'Mile High Club' was something else. :laugh:

Not really, the last firm I was with had training centres in such exotic locations as Lutterworth and Hounslow, although I did spend a week covering for another engineer in Llandudno. Which was nice. Luckily I took my geetar along.

Not really being a big drinkin' type I'd prefer to get out and do something rather than get smashed in the bar or stay in my room.

My Dad went to Budapest a few times over the last year and saw some really great street performers with various jazz influences and saw loads of posters for concerts and stuff.

I can say from the pictures that it is a very very pretty place and the walk along the river is fascinating.

My Dad thought the Pest side was nicer than Buda.

He was also there because of business, unfortunately the management over there seem to be rather awful, though I'm sure it's not a national trait.

Sounds like (training course and other stuff permitting) I should either go a couple of days early or stay behind for a couple of days after the course....

Bob,

Take your sax on as hand luggage. When you enter the plane and are greeted by an air stewardess/steward, ask if they can stow your sax. there is usually room in the cupboard behind them to the right. Failing this, there is enough room in the overhead compartments to stow a tenor sax, so your alto will fit easily.

Oh Bob you will love it - can you take Dorreen? Quite romantic (imho). Get out and about as much as possible, if you can I'd recommend:

Aquincum Museum and Roman Ruin and Franz Liszt Museum, although there are loads of museums and galleries. There are some great spas and baths - we were only there 2 days so didn't get to as many places as we'd have liked.

Definitely on our list of places to go back to.

Seriously though, she's only too happy for me to head off and do stuff on my own (and vice versa), and she wouldn't want to go anyway. I doubt you'll be seeing her at the Real Life Breakfast Room either.
