BREAKFAST ROOM GIG GUIDE

Hi Folks!

I thought it might be useful to have a section dedicated to reports on upcoming gigs or gigs that you have recently attended, and any subsequent thoughts, recommendations, CDs and suchlike.

I have been to 2 in the past week:

1. Dave Stapleton (with Lunar Sax Quartet) performing his new work "Catching Sunlight" - excellent gig at Dempsey's in Cardiff. I especially enjoyed Neil Yates on Trumpet, and have bought it on CD, along with Neil Yates' recent CD of 'celtic jazz'.

2. Arild Andersen Trio (with Tommy Smith on Tenor Sax) at Purcell Room, London South Bank. Interesting, very loud stuff from 3 very noted musicians (Arild has performed with Stan Getz amongst others).
Eash player was technically awesome but IMO several of the pieces seemed to lack a tune or theme, and was dominated by its volume. Having bought and subsequently listened to the ECM live recording at a reduced volume it was more enjoyable but still inferior to the Stapleton CD.

Hope others can post on this topic especially as musicians invariably do the rounds and may well be appearing n a club near you in the near future

Went to the Bull's Head in Barnes (London) last Tuesday to see Sax Appeal lead by Derek Nash. I liked it. Very proficient playing of 4 saxes and a varied programme of orchestrated pieces. This was part of the London Jazz Festival and there were all of 21 people in the audience, I felt they deserved a bigger audience. Jazz doesn't seem too popular these days 🙁

I was listening to some Dave Stapleton tracks only yesterday! I was sent a sampler CD by Edition Records and his work accounts for about half the tracks - yes really worth a listen.

Hi there!

Major Recommendation for forthcoming weekend - CHRISTIAN WALLUMROD ENSEMBLE!

1. Bristol - 27.11
2 .Oxford - 28.11
3. Leeds - 29.11
4. Manchester - 30.11

Main drawback - no sax player
Ensemble consists of:
piano, trumpet, violin/viola, cello, baroque harp, percussion.

The trumpet play, arve henriksen has a unique sound, similar to a flute, and is now just starting to record on ECM!

Final recommendation, especially for PeeDee - Matt Wates Sextet in Portsmouth Jazz Club on 15th December.

I have seen them twice - quite fantastic 60's style "without the egotism commonly found in jazz from then onwards" (Matt Wates)
Also in other parts of UK from 9 Dec onwards.

Tomorrow night at Marlow (In the British Legion next to the railway station) will be Jean Toussaint on tenor sax (Formerly of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers) playing with trumpeter Byron Wallen backed by the Frank Toms Trio. Entry ?7, at 8pm.

The problem with posting these here is that the later gigs will get added to the list and be a long way down. Wouldn't it be better to start a new thread for each gig in the Saxophone Players topic? Just a thought, I'm all for publicising and reviewing gigs.

Went to a gig at The Old Grammar School, a trendy pub in Truro. There were four bands on in all but by far the best was the last one even though we, er they, didn't come on until about 11 pm. The band is called The Various Assortments and we, er they, are just great. We, er (oh you get the gist), play Roxy Music crossed with Madness and Sqeeze (so I'm told) styles and have alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet/trombone, guitar, bass and drums. The guitarist sings and writes the songs,

One thing we didn't like about the gig was that we were using the house PA and it was so bleedin' loud. Set up for the previous bands who were all guitar bands, the setup was useless for the different instruments we use, I had to play almost all my bits by feel as the monitor was worse than useless and I couldn't hear myself at all and neither could the bassist. When the first bands were on many of the clientelle went outside because it was so loud, so unnecessary. Being loud doesn't make it good.

Anyway, it was my first official gig so I have lost my live gig cherry and I'm so relieved.

Derek Nash and Sax Appeal are on again at the Bull's Head on 9th Dec. They do a good Thai curry there too (the pub, not the band). The band lineup also featured Matt Wates at last week's gig.
