Hiya,

I am planning to buy a Selmer C* mpc for my alto. I am currently on Yamaha 6C.

Has anyone here tried both MPCs before? Any significant difference?

How different C* and C** is? 8|

Hi.

I've got a Selmer C* and C** for my YTS62. For me I find the C* a better tonal quality without a lot of airy puffs taht I get with the C** mouth peice.

I used to run a 5* on an YAS62 but changed to the C* and found a huge difference in ease of playing, but also sound and range quality.

When I started, my alto had a Yamaha 5C. Like the 6C, they are plastic. Later I upgraded to a Selmer C* and, like all the ebonite ones I tried, the sound was much warmer. I just liked the Selmer best at the time and like Yamaha Mad, preferred it to the C**.
The 5C is 67thou tip opening, the 6C is 71.
The Selmer C* is 67, the C** is 71

So If you went for the C* you'd be going for smaller opening. If you're used to the wider opening already you might not find the C** so different in terms of air support I guess, but you might notice the tone. You really have to try them for yourself.

Hi Tommy. I have the Selmer C* C** and D facings for the alto and they all play great. The C* is the popular one for the alto and like you I am thinking of buying a new one.

I use a Selmer Soloist C** on my tenor and I love it.

Jim.

The first mouthpiece I got when I upgraded from the original basic piece that came with my alto was a Selmer. I tried a few mouthpieces back-to-back, and found the Soloist to be the best at the time. Using comparitively soft reeds (2-2.5) I found a D opening was good for me.

I played a Selmer soloist C** and was immediately taken with the lightning response from it.

Much quicker and easier blowing than a 6C, as it should be at 4 x the price. IMHO the best alto piece out there, but thats my own taste. I'm sure many jazzers will totally disagree with me but each to his own.

I went to the shop yesterday to buy the mpc. The price advertised on their website is ?65. However, i was told by the manager that the price on the website is "out of date" and the new price is ?98.... Because the pounds depreciates

That's an increase of around 50%. Pound has dipped around 33% against the Euro and done better against the US Dollar.
Legally the ?65 is only an offer to trade and not enforceable but which company was it?
You might be better off with a bespoke RPC from Ron, wait for Pete's PPA or both.

That wasn't very helpful then.....
I think if the shop is going to use the internet as an advertising medium they have a responsibility to keep it upto date.
I'd have pushed this point a bit as its their mistake. Maybe a bit of discount? or at least would have got it off my chest.
If their website has a disclaimer for out of date pricing for a short period of time say about a week I'm OK with sort of thing. Anything much longer isn't a reliable source and not responsibly managed.
It's a not a new Era anymore, time to get shipshape!

Hope I don't sound too grumpy this morning :erm:

I was offered ?82 but they just have C and C**... They will have new stock by next week. I might bring my sax to the shop to try a few mpcs before deciding which one to get.

Hi,
I would suggest you try out some mouthpieces with different reeds and then order the one you like best from net musical instruments - they are significantly cheaper than anywhere else - Selmer S 80 (all facings) is ?67.95 with free postage! BARGAIN! you can't even get them cheaper than this on e-bay! :w00t:

have played c* and yam. 6c .for me the selmer c* is a much better mpc.due to the square chamber.easy blowing and much warmer sound ,not thinny plastic sound like the yamaha.bought mine for ?40 off e bay.excellent purchase in all ways.

Thanks for the link Emma, that's a great price. I've been going to buy one since they about ?40 new. The one i have came with the sax and is a bit thin and chipped around the tip rail.

Just as a matter of interest a friend loaned me a s/h Selmer C that plays very well. When I commented on its yukky colour he told me that it had been OK until he cleaned it in boiling water. Some mothers do have em.

Thanks again. Jim.

Might get a soprano C* ...

Selmer C**

Tried it yesterday, great mpc.....

Ya, it is free blowing... the air passes through the sax so easily without much resistance. This also means that it consumes too much air. Luckily i have my little soft toy in the bell to help conserve air :w00t:

QUESTION

Is "free blowing" always a good thing???

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
