You run a review publication and you get samples from everybody, most importantly, before they are even released. In most cases, those samples are keepers with a strict "do not sell any of this stuff" agreement and I have seen sites/publications getting booted when some of the goods surfaced in the channel.

In the case of computer hardware, of course, the value of the goods was also in the thousands of $$ so there was no way to pay for everything if you did 5-6 reviews a month.

Everybody knew that these samples were free but they came from all manufacturers and that was never the issue, The issue was advertising contracts which biased a lot of reviewers. Often, reading some of the articles by the competition made me want to call them and explain how things work. But interestingly enough, when there were some really hanebüchen claims, often the manufacturers called me to ask for an independent take. But this is getting off topic.

One thing, book sales have been ticking up again, specifically romance novels, AFAIK, vinyls have been outselling CDs in the last 2 years but then, who still buys CDs anyway.

And no, you are not getting too old, all you need is a small adjustment to swim with the flow, like: "The Romantic Saxophone"

Or something like that.

"Selmer and van Doren: A True Love Story"
