Sax Harness

As I've still got a baddy neck/back I'm thinking of getting a harness. I've seen a Lebayle one on Sax.co which goes over your back and around your waist, rather than the usual round the shoulders. Has anyone any experience or knowledge of this or any recommendations.

:laugh: Really OG you must get your glasses changed, the title reads SAX! Although when I was looking at them on the internet my husband did get a bit alarmed when he glanced over my shoulder 😉

Hi Sharon, glad you had a dry holiday! Welcome back!

I bought this harness but found it too uncomfortable so don't use it. If you would like to try it just PM me with your address and I will send it.

I used the Neotech harness for quite a while but although it's great for relieving the weight I found it a bit restricting. (I was unconsciously having to push the sax to the right thereby causing a strain on my thumb. )This was pointed out to me in the shop when I bought my new tenor. (You might not find this a problem though if you are playing alto.)

They then gave me an over the shoulder strap to try but this pushed the sax too far to the right!


Thought I was never going to solve this problem and even considered making my own.

However, several hours on the net and I found this - the BA sling made by a chap in the Netherlands. It's part harness and part sling, fits all sizes and is reasonably comfortable for weedy ol'me! Doesn't lighten the load as much as the Neotech but allows more movement and I can still play quite happily for an hour and a half . It's the best for me that I have found so far.

I've used a BG harness for a couple of years now with good results, although it's not great if you play sitting down.

Thanks for the information Pauline and Mike. Mike, I'd considered a BG harness but heard they were a bit restrictive. Horses for courses I suppose. My doctor advised me to play sitting down, but it's not an option because I'm very short and when I sit there's nowhere to put the sax unless I play to one side which is very awkward!

Pauline, I've had a look at that website and it looks very promising so I've ordered one and hopefully that will sort me out. Thanks for that, you've saved me hours of trawling 😉 . I am hopefully getting a tenor sax soon so I really will need something to take the strain otherwise I'm going to get a dowagers hump, and that's sooo unattractive in a sax player 😛

I find the BG harness works for me because the sax naturally hangs in a good position. I don't find it restrictive when standing, but then I don't move much! The reason it won't work sitting down is that you can't pull the horn to the side when using it as it doesn't have any "play" in it. I use a normal neck strap when sitting, but I don't get back pain then, only when standing.

I use a BG harness on Bari as I was getting neck shear issues, miss-aligned vertebrae...ouch!

It works well for the bari as its (I imagine) a bit like a bra and fits around my man boobs or chesticles nicely thank you......I need a diet!

I use a standard BG for alto and tenor.

I personally find the lebayles much more comfortable to use- they don?t quite absorb weight the way BG or Neotech do but are far less constricting & have a front like a normal strap so you can pull the sax away from your body... Unless you?ve got a serious problem with the weight of the sax they?re definately worth a try...
